: Who's got pics of my rollover on Proving Grounds?

Friday afternoon, 3/29/02, I pulled a left-rear-pirouette into full reverse endo, onto my roof, off of the second waterfall, on Proving Grounds.

If you were there, you know that my digital camera stopped working after bouncing off the ceiling, and I have no pictures.

Probably 30 people witnessed the rollover, and at least three said they had it on video, with plenty more taking pics.

Please please please, if you have pictures or video, send 'em, post 'em, something... I wanna see 'em.

How did this happen? Is this one of the "Winch only" waterfalls or is it one that others drive up?

Were you on a different line?

It's off of the second waterfall. That's the one with the big V-notch where you go into the creekbottom, then hang a hard left, climb up about 1.5 jeep-lengths, and hang a hard right up the sandy side of one wall of the V.

I was climbing hard left, and the left front got a little too far left, climbed a rock outcrop, then unloaded the right front. As the truck spun (I've seen one video, courtesy of in-camera replay--but I don't have a copy of it) the left rear tire sidewalled the rock wall, and flipped it over backwards onto its lid.

This was in the Mantis.

Memory refresher (this one's from Pritchett, two days after the rollover) as to what the Mantis is...

Pirouette manuver, about the only good way to describe driving that section.

Yup, that's about the only way to describe it. I did the spin a little high, and, well... oops. I do like the whole "left-rear-pirouette-into-reverse-endo" thing, it makes it sound so much more graceful than it felt. Like something you'd hear a figure skating announcer say... :)

Morpheus, I'd take some pics of what it looks like now, but my digital is on the fritz again (rrgh).

The guys at Home Depot thought I was kidding when I bought the toolbox that is now my "bed"... I told them I needed a toolbox to fit in my 2' long, 3' wide truck bed, that'd hold my tools in when my truck was upside down. I oughta go back over there and tell them it worked. :)

I took a ride with Scott a few days later.... damage is minimal. The roof is a little wrinkled, the dome light is busted, and he's got a good candidate for one of his speedglass windscreens, but the hood and fenders (minimal, anyways) are intact... doors are almost entirely unscathed, etc.

It pretty much looks the same now as it did before... the driver, though. He looks just as goofy as ever! :flipoff2:

Hey, there's limits to anything... the fun part was recovery. We hooked a winch off an EB behind me, over the rear axle to the cagework, then flipped it (end-over-end, nose down this time) back onto its wheels. It's mighty impressive to see that thing sitting nose-down full vertical. :)

Incidentally, for those contemplating similar "stunts"... as my wife has reminded me, it's not a great idea... my shoulder still hurts, and I have a small bald spot where my head hit something on the ride. Good thing I wasn't that great looking before. :)

Nope, Steve is in the one video I've seen... he was in primo position to have TSL tracks running right up his leg, and he took off running when I started to go over. He was actually spotting (not sure if I want to say that, 'cause he was more "advising", and I don't want to sound like I'm blaming him) me on this particular spot.
