Im putting a PS drop front axle in my XJ, and i was wondering if its poss to flip my NP231 to get it to work? ive gotta 4:1 low and SYE so dont really wanna get rid of it. i know that you can clock them with a ring, just wondering if there was something that is limiting them from being flipped upside down? thanks

its chain driven so i would guess that it probably couldn't get the proper lubrication if you flipped it. Also you'd have to have some pretty crazy linkage setup to get the shifter manageable. Sell the 231 on here and buy a D300 or some other pass side drop TC.

The pickup for the pump is at the bottom of the case (as per mounted in a YJ/TJ). You'd have to rework that.

I went to a psgr side axle, so I swapped to a Dana 300 t-case. Solved that problem quick. :grinpimp:

When I went psg side, the dana 300 was cheaper than a sye kit and it's way shorter than the 231. The 4:1 for d300 is cheaper than the 231 also.

Yeah somebody will want your 231 so sell it and build a d300. By the way, what would you ask for it if you sold it?:)

well ill prob just keep it like it is.... found a HP44 dirt cheap so that makes it all a real simple choice.

I am also thinking of doing this. Relocate the oil pump pickup, move the breather and adapt the shifter. It doesn't look too bad. Next weekend I am going to SLO to pickup a spare front half to see how hard this will be.

why flip it? there's some trucks that came with a passenger-drop 231. it's in some old 4wheeldrive article about the 241.

Hmm. I had never heard of a pass drop NP231. I will have to look into it.

The reason for flipping a 231 is that I have a hp 44 with an arb from an old project and want to toss it into my YJ. Also I have a lot of 231 parts kicking around.

I would imagine a fliped 231 would have oiling/blowing up issues unless you gheto'ed the oiling pickup...

Although you could use the front half of the 231 to make a crawl box... And then use a pass drop d300
