: Vent in front of windshield
Twig4790 04-02-2002, 11:50 AM Any body know what this is for? All I know is that there is two small holes that let water come in and ruin things like CD players! AHHHH! oh well, is there any hoses that are suposed to hook up two these holes? Thank you.:p
Twig4790 04-02-2002, 11:51 AM I am talkinf abou the one right in the center, just below the windshield, but not right on the hood.
GloNDark 04-02-2002, 11:52 AM I don't know about yours, but mine is the "Fresh air vent" for the cab.
Mustard Dog 04-02-2002, 11:57 AM Yep, fresh air vent. I just made a solid aluminium panel to cover it up, my 40 will only bikini, didn't need the extra air;)
Mustard Dog 04-02-2002, 11:59 AM Another thing....those holes you're talking about are supposed to have hoses attatched to them that empty into the engind compartment;)

Yes. I had the same problem with my hoses rotting and falling out at some point. Leaked water behind the dash area.
I don't remember how much they are, but they are expensive little fawkers for just rubber hoses (they have a bend in them and an end that is designed to fit into the sheetmetal hole).
Macgyver 04-02-2002, 01:27 PM i replaced mine with rubber hose and a piece of copper tubing.
pontiota 04-02-2002, 03:05 PM I had the same problem I just found some heater hose that fit and ran it out through the fire wall on one side and plugged the other side. I'm not sure why there are two drains in the first place.
t wrecks 04-02-2002, 03:13 PM I also had the same leaking problem. Got some rubber hose from the hardware store and slipped it in. Works fine.
Land Crusher 04-02-2002, 04:42 PM I had same problem I just moved the radio:beer:
Twig4790 04-02-2002, 04:46 PM thanks for the help.
Mr McGee 04-02-2002, 06:46 PM if its a vent, what does it vent to? does it just let air in? explain to me how it functions plz
coyote 04-02-2002, 08:30 PM It vents fresh air into the cab on mine....or at least it did before I plated it and painted over....for those with a top their real nice air inlet....
Mine just collects pine needles and leaks water. I replaced the hoses once (a long time ago) It is kind of nice to just pull the knob and have some fresh air, but I'm going to close it up permanantly because it rains so much here I get more water than air. Just need an aluminum panel (Hmmmmmm..........Boeing surplus before I get laid off)

Should be a knob, I believe, under the dash. Maybe it's more like a lever;)
On newer rigs there is a pull knob on the dash that says "Fresh Pull"
Mr McGee 04-03-2002, 02:02 PM "pull fresh"?? look what that knob does once...it takes a little door underneath the blower, and normally the blower is on recirculate...but when you pull the knob the air comes from the vent on the outside. so i dont think its that knob that does anything with the vent on the hood...somebody correct me and step in.
Twig4790 04-03-2002, 06:15 PM Yah, how does the air get from outside into the cab?
Mr McGee 04-03-2002, 08:42 PM ttt, needs some exposure!!
t wrecks 04-04-2002, 09:33 AM Mr. Mcgee is correct about the fresh air knob controlling the flap in the firewall by the heater. I too have been unable to understand the purpose for the vent under the windshield.
Mr McGee 04-04-2002, 10:00 AM im glad somebody understands!!
if anybody finds out wtf its for, please tell us.
BigRedFJ40 04-04-2002, 12:27 PM The vent that was originally questioned is an early model feature only. I believe that is was discontinued around 74. There was a small knob under the dash to the left of the heater. When you pushed on the knob, it would raise a plate (vent). And when you pulled on the knob, it would close it. When they work, they work great. But they do have a tendency to leak. That is why they did away with them probly. All of the later model 40's still have the vent in the cowl but, they are sealed from the factory and the linkage was also removed.
Mr McGee 04-04-2002, 12:46 PM thanks, but wtf were they thinking??? y not just remove the vent all together and eliminate leaks??
i guess nobody has to answer that--i'm just ranting.
t wrecks 04-05-2002, 11:44 AM My cruiser has a prodution date of Sept. '74 and there is no lever and the vent seems to be sealed except for the drain holes. You know, the ones that leak.
rick d 04-05-2002, 12:08 PM History Lesson-
The vent was sealed for a few years around 1974 in US models until finally being removed. Overseas, 40 series continued to get the vent until the end of production (11/84). I saw not more than 2 weeks ago a South African spec 1983 with the vent (in Regina, Canada).
...there are stranger things out there in them thar cruisers
Mr McGee 04-05-2002, 08:36 PM then why did they continue to put the vent in, but have it sealed?
