Hi,
I am new to the site and this will be my first off road build up. I currently own a 73-dodge challenger that my father and I restored 6 years ago. Just pick up a Scout 80 that needs a lot of work.

I could use some help on which vehicles I can get (see below)
Differentials / Transfer case from that I can put in the scout.

I have a 727 that was behind a 400hp 340. Can I use this in the scout with any particular transfer case?

What kind of lift do I need to fit 35” or 37” tires?

Here is the build plan
1961 Scout 80
318 or 360
727 trans
Transfer case?
Front diff Dana 44 (from what?)
Rear dif Dana 44 or Dana 60 (from what?)
Leaf springs (what lift?)

The Scout will not be a rock crawler but I would like a good trail rig. I appreciate any help from people at this site!

This is the best 4x4 site I have found for scout info!

Dont expect the guys on here to be any help with your question. try doing lots of searching first, then ask questions, and id try www.binderbulletin.com first. search that site.

But to answer a few of your questions, my scout is equiped with scoutII axles, spring over axle (SOA), hi-steer, 35 MTR's, and a IH 196 4cyl. Its a VERY capable tril rig. With the power you want your prolly going to want a scoutII dana 300 tranfer case. your best bet would to be just find a scoutII with the parts you need and buy it. You'll be able to prolly get everything you need.

But like i said dont expect any help here, just expect a lot of these (:flipoff2: ) and 2nd grade maturity. my.02cents

Ok the best advise I can give you is this:

Before asking anymore questions, be sure to use the search function. Every bit of info can be found here. First I would try the FAQ at the top of the page. Next search the other forums, using this has answered many questions I've had over the few years I've been here.

Also another place to look is the Binder Bulletin

Keep in mind, in this forum we are not kind to our rigs. So if your looking for a touchy feely place to be, this isn't it.

Your a noob with questions and you didn't search first. Welcome to Pirate, there is a shit load of good info here and most of us don't like repeating ourselves, searching will keep you from getting flamed.

Start with the FAQ post at the top of the forum and then use the search this forum button. All your questions have been asked and answered many times over.

My $.02...

Get it running, safe and "reliable" in stock(ish) form for now. Play with it, enjoy it and use that time to learn about your Scout, Early Scouts and IH's in general. Read more builds (both 80/800 and SII) as well as Toyota, Jeep, Bronco, Buggy and other builds to get a really good idea what things you want to incorporate in your "next" build.

Then I would suggest starting "small". Get some 33" tires and make the necessary mods to make them fit. Swap in your desired powerplant and drive train then take it out and continue to enjoy it. The build from there.

Build "slow" and in steps, expanding as your 4x4 and 4x4 specific fab skill develop and improve (sounds like you got a good start as it is). This will also avoid the "perpetual build" that many guys fall into. And *I* think you will find the whole thing more enjoyable over all.

but hey, what to I know.

PS, very nice job on the Challenger.

and dboy... just leave. If that what you REALLY think, then you don't know shit about this site and the people on it, and we would be better off with out "you".

thats the kind of hospitality i like to hear, i was kidding guys, i read this site every day, love the tech and know how you guys work. thats how a REALLY feel:D

I agree with the keep it stock for a while, in a few months you'll get tired of breaking stuff, get bigger better stuff, break more stuff, get more........and so on. till youve been at it for years like these guys and have a sick tube buggy with a scout logo. Im on my way there...

Thanks for the input guys. I am just going to lurk and read the tech for a while.

Binderbound I miss read what he said. Most people that I have talked to said why don't I just use a scout 800 that already has a v8. That is what I thought he was implying.

For the enigne Maybe in the future I could put a stroked 340 - 416cubes but for now I am on a budget. This build is going to be in process for a while.

RustoleumWhite I like your advice.

:shaking: :grinpimp: Obviously you are new to this "Newbie" thing. No Newb has ever said anything even remotely as intelligent as what you just wrote. Maybe you'll do okay here after all. :flipoff2:

Search is your friend. :D

EDIT: I and many others have done the v-8 --> 4 cyl Scout engine bay swap. BB will discourage you because many of the most outspoken people there are parrots with very little skill of their own, so it sounds too hard for them.

With the power you want your prolly going to want a scoutII dana 300 tranfer case.

Why wast $4-500 on a Scout 300 and still have the crappy D20 Texas pattern. Since you are looking to run Mopar, use a 727 from a Dodge 4x4 which should have the round 6 pattern. Then you can run a Jeep 300, Atlas or Stak case. Hell you can even keep the 203 for doubler duties.

put whatever you want in it, nothing is gonna bolt in worth a damn so it's gonna be custom anyway.. :)

As for the questions..

What kind of lift do I need to fit 35” or 37” tires?

Depends on how much you are willing to cut, SOA, stock newer wider springs should do it.

Transfer case?

If budget is not an issue Atlas 4sp hands down, if not the 300 will bolt on to it and be pretty stout and fairly cheap with upgrades available for it..

Front diff Dana 44 (from what?)

Well, I'd say ford so you can get a high pinion HD model that is a bit stouter than anything else. Otherwise it doesn't matter, dana is dana but you'll want flat top knuckles which you could always buy and swap in anyway..

Rear dif Dana 44 or Dana 60 (from what?)

Once again I would say ford because they are the only ones with a high pinion, and make it a 60!

Leaf springs (what lift?)

Stock lift is fine, I like my wagoneer springs front and rear. My fronts are actually 44044 which are a mild lift application for the wagoneer.

I"d love to find a running, rust free 80. I'd rebuild the stock running gear, use a mild lift just enough to clear a set of 31"s. It would be my daily driver:grinpimp: .

Then, here you go. One easy payment of $2500.00 and she's all yours. A "nearly" rust free daily driver for the hardcore tightwad. :smokin:

Alot of crack gets smoked while on this board. Your question is valid. go search? get F***D. why do you reply if you don't want to help? 1961scout80 if it is a relatively rust free body I would do one of two things. This is only my opinion mind you. Take the 80 body and put it on a scout II chassis. Simple, easy to do and you can be rollin in no time. the other option is throw in a 304 or 345. If you really want a dodge sell the 80 and just buy a ramcharger. When you get into switching engines, trannies and t-cases you need some serious welding and fab skills. It is alot more difficult than a resto. If you have those skills then show me what you got.

With a post like that it just shows how much of a drippy dick newb you really are.

If you knew anything it would be that almost the exact amount of time would be spent swapping in an IH mill compared to a mopar.why not swap in an engine that's worth a shit?

Aparently your the one on crack because I think a 'hey, try searching.the answers are there' is better than no response at all.

Eat my ass.
