: throttle control loss
SnowScoutII 04-02-2002, 12:44 PM When I am on the freeway and in 4th I will let off the gas and my truck will veer to the right sometimes. It never happens around town. I have (t-18, 304, 33's. 3inch body and 2 inch add in the rear. Is is a result of alignment or bumpsteer? I better fix this before I veer over and drive over a honda or something:skull:
JoshC 04-02-2002, 12:49 PM That's what I love most about my Scout! When I step on the gas it throws me in the fast lane. When I let off, it pulls me in the slow lane!
Could be...
Allignment?
Low tire pressure?
Bad Tranny/motor mounts?
Monkeyboy 04-02-2002, 12:53 PM Josh let me get my tranny mount and cross member done. Then we can get rid of that temporary fix that you are still running :D
ol John Henry 04-02-2002, 01:00 PM Is a hub still locked or stuck ??
Hey !!.... Its possible
Old Scout 04-02-2002, 01:02 PM Check your hubs. sometimes they do not disengage all the way and do funny things to the steering. Too much grease in them seems to be the most common aliment.
RustoleumWhite 04-02-2002, 01:04 PM got a rear locker or somthing????
Like others said.... it could be lots of thing.
What is your stearing arangment?? Does the truck lurch, or just steer that way??
Have you ever had an alignment done?? (ya, I know, and alignment on a trail rig.... like that will last).
Almost sounds like what others have described as "street" locker-walk. but I have no first-hand experiance with it :(
RustoleumWhite 04-02-2002, 01:06 PM O-ya... look for loose U-bolts and such, bad bushings.... slop???
SnowScoutII 04-02-2002, 01:06 PM The tires are at 35 alll around the alignment is ok and the mounts are fineas far as I know. I love my scout but not when I nearly give the old lady next to me a near heart attack when i slide over into her lane:D
SnowScoutII 04-02-2002, 01:08 PM I know its not in 4. So I know its not locked in. The hubs are almost new so they can be fubar yet
SnowScoutII 04-02-2002, 01:10 PM The ubolts are tight and the bushings are shot. I have heard of people damaging the ring and pinion and making a half azz locker by accident. I know its rare but every now and again if I make a sharp right my tires will start chirping:confused:
SnowScoutII 04-02-2002, 01:12 PM I put in new streering joints when I put the 44 in ( about a year ago) so I know they are crapp yet. I just changed the grease in them about 50 miles ago.
Rubicrawler 04-02-2002, 01:18 PM Sounds like you may have a locker in the rear. I've driven several rigs with Detroits and they all wanted to change lanes when I got on-or-off the power. Just my .02
muskyman 04-02-2002, 01:25 PM what kinda springs?...stock?
the combination of stock saggy springs,a really bad bushing in a spring eye and the stock crappy negative castor angle can sure cause it to swerve all over the place.
also I'd check to see if you have a bent tie rod. when they bend they get shorter causing to much toe in.and yes thats another thing that can cause it.
I have seen a combination of all of the above in the same truck, and my buddy wondered why it was such a bitch to keep it in a lane!

Has it just started changing lanes, or has it done it all along?
How soft are the springs and what kind of suspension? How big is the motor and how heavy is the brick in your right boot?
My Travelall will dart a bit when I slam the throttle on or off - stand on the gas and the driver's front fender lifts up a good bit and I get "bump steer".. I usually correct for it, then lift on the gas, and get bump steer the other direction. Oops.
Springs are too soft..
How about a 4-link rear with rear-steer?
SnowScoutII 04-04-2002, 12:37 PM its done it all along. It wont do it while i am in town. It only seems to act up above 60 mph. I am useing the stock springs, the 304 and a size 16 boot. I dont really slam on the gas. I dont think I have a locker but it shows characteristics of one. Did they come w/factor limi slip in 72? The suspension is shot but only reacts at high speeds:rasta:

Could be a LS in the rear from the factory.
In '72, it might even be a PowerLok instead of a Tracklok.
Pull the diff cover and see if it's open or not.. or jack a tire up and see how much torque it takes to rotate the tire.
The test procedure is in the factory service manual.
