: Failure mode on a d300

So what goes first? The reason I ask is I just picked up a a d300 today, I want to eventually go to steeper gears, but I can't afford it. I am thinking about running as is for a year, and the rebuilding when I can afford the gears?

I was thinking about running ATF through and then brake cleaning the hell out of it...any other ideas?

The Scout 300 case is pretty thin on top in the curve.

I'v seen a few brake just like that

and a couple 20's as well

do you have a shackle reversal?

if so do you have enough slip in the front shaft?

WHY? You want to kill it quicker?

to clean it out, then breakclean then I would run gear oil, in the shipping it got all sorts a shit it in... I assume you meant I would fawk it up if I ran ATF instead of gear oil:question:

Yea I did.

Did you know it was a practice in the early 90's for some manufactures to run ATF or 30 wt in gear assemblies to help cut down on the drag. They were trying to squeeze every last MPG out of there fleet. The light weight oil did not cushion like gear oil and gear fractures and synchromesh rings failures were very common.

old scout is right on the money here

atf in a all gear case will make it:barf: in any hardcore use

the chain cases can run ATF because the chain does not create the sheering presure that gears do

forget the drag and put gear oil and lucas oil additive in 50/50

has worked for me for years and years and havent had a gear failure in years

Redline oil makes a synthetic "Shock Resistant oil" Most drag racers swear by it in rears and trannies. spensive sh*t though...
