: What to look for in used first-gen 4 runner?

I'm thinking of buying one of these beasts, and I have a couple questions that maybe someone would be kind enough to help with:

First off, what specific problems should I look for on these trucks other than the obvious (i.e. rust)? Are there any really mean and expensive failures that are common and hard to spot? Has anyone put together a checklist of things to look for specifically for toyota 4wds?

I'm also curious about the general impression of using these as a work truck. Does the topper render the bed effectively too much of a pain to use?

First - F A Q

As for the work truck thing, depends on what you're planning to do. Between the cap and the backseat it isn't quite as handy as a pickup. All depends on what you need it for.

Maybe you could point me in the direction of a FAQ that pertains to this question?

The search feature on this site is just about worthless.

I have one that I bought from a junk yard for $1000 that didn't run so good. I put three hundred into gaskests, filters and a timing set and its just like new.

its just about everything you need to know about building a toy.

as for what to look for in buying one look for: rust, grease or oil on axle's engine tcase tranny engine, dont buy a 3.0 liter v6 they have tons of issues. check the frame over for impacts and straightnes.

Top of the Toy Forum where everybody can see it...

Seems that the search feature works for others...

Still didn't answer what sort of "work" you plan to do with the truck...

SR5 seats are WAY nicer IMO, and the inclinometers are pretty cool. dont get one that someone has hacked up, buy a stock one with a good frame.

Whats up dude, check to make sure the 4wd works, listen to the engine and listen for any unusual noises.....Other than that the only thing ive replaced on mine is the rear u-joint on the driveshaft, new transmission filter and etc
