I have a 99 2500 4x4 with a cummins turbo diesel with an automatic. Is there a way to change over to the 6 speed manual or is there a better automatic. Well, besides the ones from ATS, bullydog and some of the other high dollar tranny manufactures? Mine still shifts good, and I change fluid every 20,000 miles. It has 99,000 miles on it. how many can I expect out of it?( I dont do any towing with it)

Yes you can switch over. There are some things you have to iron out. A stock tranny could make it to 200,000 miles if treated right and maintained.

Look on dieseltruckresource.com or turbodieselregister.com, that is where you'll find more details. Unfortunately that kind of info isn't over here, and apparently you piss off some of the locals to easily around here.

You can build a pretty good tranny just using 48re internals, spend the bucks on a good converter and get a big cooler also.

you could check out this site but it deals with the NV4500 conversion, they may have something for the 5600 though.

As far as the Auto goes, check out Cope racing transmisions, they were very helpful with me. I would say if the truck has no major mods, and you dont tow, dont worry, that trans is usually good to about 500 ft lbs. of torque stock. We have a 97 CTD at work, doesnt tow, and its fine. Best advise, One big tranny cooler. I was even thinking the one from B&M with the small electric fan looked nice. maintenance is still the trannys best friend.
