Tahcustomscout 02-18-2006, 08:44 PM Well, so far this weekend Friday I dropped my front axle and got it up on the bench to change out the gears. I dropped my front springs off at a local shop to have them rearched, then picked up some self aligning rocker arms for my engine (When i rebuilt the engine i bought some heads that ended up being off a GM crate motor, I didn realize I had the wrong rockers untile I bent 3 pushrods). Then friday night we got an ice storm in and the entire area has almost shut down. People around here just cant deal with any winter weather. So today I installed the new rockers, and in doing so I noticed that one of the valve keepers on my #8 exhaust valve was missing::eek: so I replaced it, and installed the rockers. BTW it runs great now. Much more responsive. So I have the axle torn down and will spend tomorrow setting it up. That is if I can find a parts store open. That is unless i get a honey do or something.
Mechanos 02-18-2006, 10:11 PM Not a thing.... shelled out the cash earlier this week for the tow rig tranny rebuild parts. That cleaned out my wallet and one of my bank accounts.... it'll be a while before I recover from that, but at least I'll get $400 of it back when I return my VB and TC cores.
Still need to make one of the tools I'll need to rebuild it and then I'll be all tooled up. I'll have a couple weeks to clean up the shop and prep for the rebuild when the parts get here.

Looks like fun trip.
Trying out a new winch line saftey weight:confused:
bassdude 02-18-2006, 10:45 PM got me a winch for the scout! just got it home. good deal too i think.
warn 9500I like brand new with cable, fairlead, controller and plate for $500.
We were not actually winching , just using the line to pull the front end down .
Eagle-Mark 02-18-2006, 11:43 PM Man I miss the desert! Canceled a wheeling trip this weekend do to -5 degrees...
Installed a Pertronix II and coil in the Travelall and a coil and set of wires in the off roader in my heated garage.
Harvester of Sorrow 02-18-2006, 11:47 PM Put air in the flat front tires.
Started scheduling on the calendar when I am going to buy and retro my PnP TH400 in.
GM book says it is a 4 hour job to do a straight R&R...so it should take me all weekend.
binderbound 02-18-2006, 11:58 PM I wrenched. everyday is a little closer to the done date. still need to port the steering box and install. Then its just wrap up do-dads.:smokin:
Snoopy 02-19-2006, 12:04 AM Washed the T-ette in 5 degree weather to get some good photos of it. Just about froze my hiny off. Then cleaned and did a little laundry ~ the house if a freaking mess since my wife started packing! Ugh.
IHScoutman14 02-19-2006, 12:05 AM today i got my old 304 out of the scout and put the rebuilt 345 in. I did it with the shittiest engine hoist that i barrowed from the school and by myself. sucked balls, but its in.
tomorrow should be fun. i have to clean all the shit i left lyin around and then maybe start putting brackets and hoses and such back into the scout. I am waiting for my exhaust system to arrive. Got it made for 135 plus shipping (not including the flowmaster :cool2: 0
all thats left is the fuel injection shit. i am having a hell of a time finding parts so i may end up just splurging and buying the AFI kit. its expensive though...

HOS, are you gonna go through that 400 when you get it from the JY? No telling what condition on from the yard is gonna be in and unless you like to swapping trannies, it'd probably be a good idea to put new clutches and steels in it.
Gen. Nonsense 02-19-2006, 09:53 AM The Florance Junction area ~ I will be there someday soon with Rusty. That place is bad as can be.
Theres better. I like Florance cause its 40 minutes from my house.
Oh and Sat. I cleaned out the garage, and sorted my bolt bin, today I clean the side of the house and make preparations for the RV gate, and go to the dump. Exciting!
TheCopperCowboy 02-19-2006, 10:37 AM My weekend is sucking hard, so far. Had to make a trash run yesterday and grab the Scout parts, wheels, 5.0 engine & hoist, and some more trash at the shop, when my Powerstroke fuel pick up line froze harder than hell. I was stranded a mile from my house while my wife & kids sold Girl Scout cookies in Watkins. As it turns out, the Flyin' J in Aurora sells non-winterized diesel to truckers heading over the mountains or the desolate 'Plains and I wasn't the only one shut down. :mad3: My neighbor pulled me home, dually truck & gooseneck horse trailer, with his mini van. This sucks 'cause it's was my only running truck. Need a set of 31"x15" for the Ranger service truck. Anybody? :smokin:
IHScoutman14 02-19-2006, 10:48 AM What, they didnt sell 1990 chevy pickups in Kirkland?:shaking:
Apparently not! :flipoff2:
ive tried several yards and no one seems to have what im looking for. The one place that had something wanted like 250 bucks for it, so no way. i havent given up though

Yes there is Grizz in AZ.
Another GREAT run with a group of fun guys.
Their trap did fail though as I did get thru the squeeze they has planned for me without a scratch. The Grizz got me later. :)
To the guys that was there. Remember when I told the jeep Bastard not to tear up his turd jeep?
Under the Jeep and in the ARB 44 right now trying to find out why it won't unlock.

If I had the space or shop to do that in I would. Problem is that I don't:( . I would just rebuild my Switch Pitch TH400 and be done with it all.
The place that I am getting the tranny from is actually a 4x4 wrecking/parts house. They give a 90 day guarantee that it is a runner...I hope it is.
One of my best friends thinks I should rebuild it in the kitchen of my apartment and be done with it...:)
I just want to fucking wheel.
SSGTWC 02-19-2006, 11:06 AM Just another week of sitting on my ass, and spendning way too much time in front of the computer. I did get the stitches taken out Wednesday. Another week and half, and I'll have the right hand done.

Isn't that the "Mark of the Devil?"
Urban Wheeler 02-19-2006, 11:24 AM Broke a blade on the chop saw trying to cut parts for the front bumper/crossmember, then went to Roscoe's house to help with his jeep/buggy thing. The only nleft that is factory Jeep is about 6 feet of frame. Links, coils, 60's, Ford 5.0, auto, atlas, full hydro, etc... All the tube is DOM because the HREW only lasts 2 or 3 trips.
Today I think I am going to try to fix the HF chopsaw that my brother bought for cutting pvc so I can inish my bumper.

What the fawk? You're single right? Just put some card board down on the floor and another piece on the coffe table and sit of the sofa while you rebuild it.:flipoff2: Or you cover the kitchen table or counter and do it there.... one of the bennies of not bein' hitched.

SSGTWC 02-19-2006, 05:20 PM Well that one has seen the business end of the hammer a few times. But, it's probably just the camera angle.
Tahcustomscout 02-19-2006, 05:29 PM well I have finished off the weekend not getting crap done that I wanted to on my front diff. I had to order one of the pinion bearings and it wont be in untile tommorrow. Plus I run out of shims for the carrier bearings. Guess I'll have to finish it this week....
Harvester of Sorrow 02-19-2006, 06:08 PM You gonna give up the switch pitch function then?......is the new one a bop with the right tailshaft for the D20?

DJForrestA 02-20-2006, 10:15 AM Drove the scout to all my DJ Gigs. Still need shocks out back but i relocated the rear springs and pulled the broken leaf out so now I'm running chevy 3/4 tons minus the fourth leaf in the packs. Also watched this about ten times and laughed everytime.

Diesel Smoke 02-20-2006, 11:03 AM Saturday; Did my taxes and because I basically make nothing it took me all of 20 minutes, and that includes writing the check. I owed the Federal 15 bucks and the state owed me 92!! I spent the rest of the day installing my new CD deck into my Scout. My old one was crapping out, and I wanted a shiny new one. It's satellite ready and plays MP3's. So needless to say I am happy!!! Installed a headlight and marker light on my pickup. Also, played tech support for Binderbound, while he was trying to get TTTOR project two running.
Sunday; Slept late then headed over to a buddy's house to watch the 500. I ate way too much crappy party food, but the race was good. Got home later and planned on taking it easy the rest of the day. Then Binderbound called and made me fell all guilty for not working on my pickup, so I went out at around 6 and pulled my bad calipers off the pickup and tried to trouble shoot the back firing carb. Found the starter solenoid is crapping out, so it goes on the todo list.
New calipers should be in this afternoon, and I am hoping to get them installed tonight, before the rain set's in. It was 19 degrees this morning and it should be raining by evening. Some weather men are saying a day, some are saying a week, so I got to install while I have the weather!
Snoopy 02-20-2006, 12:46 PM Tom, do you have any pictures of how that radiator's hoses mesh up with the IH engine? I'm doing the same and wouldn't mind seeing how you did it.
tsm1mt 02-20-2006, 01:21 PM Tom, do you have any pictures of how that radiator's hoses mesh up with the IH engine? I'm doing the same and wouldn't mind seeing how you did it.
In progress, but here's the plan.
After using a hammer and block of wood to smash the passenger bottom corner in (it's JUST the same width as the space of the frame rail - knock the lowest "rib" in a bit, and it slides inside the frame nicely), it drops into the frame.
It would fit if you set it on top of the frame, but the lower hose fitting points into the V-belts on a p/s setup.. not good.
Anyhow, sink the radiator down between the frame rails.
The lower should be easy. I have some 1.75" universal straight radiator hose. Cut off enough to cover the fitting on the Ford radiator, then slide the stock lower hose over the 1.75" hose over the 1.75" fitting. I think this is the part that will go pretty smoothly.
Upper is a 1.5 (I think, haven't confirmed the hose size yet.. bought the hose, haven't tested). It comes out 90-deg to the radiator, lacking the 90-deg sideways twist a SII radiator has.
At this point, I'm leaning towards chucking up some 2" tube in the bender and making a 90, maybe running a weld bead around both ends (no lip maker here).. and the thought is to sleeve the 1.5 inlet with hose, and sleeve it up until I can run a 2" hose over the inlet AND my 90-deg bend.. which, I hope, will leave me with something that resembles a Scout II radiator, and a stock SII upper hose will be just dandy.
The other scenario is that the 90 puts it too far "forward"/rearward to the engine, in which case I buy more universal 2" hose and just run a straight shot from the thermostat elbow to the 90.
If I had one of my early short water necks, I might try to make something work with the earlier setup, but I don't have one sitting within arm reach, and I have several of the later (long L neck) hoses.
Still not certain how it's getting mounted to the chassis. I may weld some flat bar under the frame, cut some rubber bushings to fit inside the channel on the bottom of the radiator, and use that for a bottom, and do something similar up top, with a turnbuckle to suck the top channel down (it'll be mounted to my radiator hoop) and hold the rad in place.
Just thought that up and it sounds pretty good right now. ;)
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/PlainGallery/2006DevilWinterOverHaul/DCP_0013_002.sized.jpg
(That's a brake line that needs resecured floating in space..)
See the rad sitting on (what's left of) the corner gussets now?

As stated you need the 3/4" spacer in there.......Those pieces shouldn't be able to fit together without the spacer, I hope you didn't cut the Klune output shaft too short?
If you have trouble sourcing the spacer let me know.
CabtopXLC 02-20-2006, 05:36 PM I hadn't cut anything yet. I talked to them this morning and they are sending me the correct spacer. Thanks for the offer. I was working with an empty 205 case. So I wasn't able to check the gear engagement. I just received the master rebuild kit for it this morning. Hopefully, next weekend I'll get it all put together.
Brett
ih4ever 02-20-2006, 05:56 PM i hope you dont need to cut the output shaft...:flipoff2:   :flipoff2: i think your talking about the aluminum spacer?? has any body NOT cut theirs? i didnt and just wondering if i should have? i went over it with the amount of play, a bunch of times, my friend and i said it was ok to put in without the spacer...its kinda hard to disengage the klune... would that have anything to do with it?
Brandon 02-20-2006, 06:04 PM As far as the scout related stuff I finally broke down and dropped my axles etc off with RCD to have them setup. I was going to do it myself but got sick of tripping over them, this way they get done.. fo sure ;)
Otherwise went up to Bear Valley, snow was amazing! I took Scout (my son) to his first ski lesson, and my daughter go loved sledding. This was pretty much her first trip to the snow. I did manage to get my ZJ stuck in a ditch, luckily after a few minutes of back n forth I got out and nobody saw me except my wife who WAS sleeping LOL
Binder 02-20-2006, 07:40 PM i hope you dont need to cut the output shaft...:flipoff2:   :flipoff2: i think your talking about the aluminum spacer?? has any body NOT cut theirs? i didnt and just wondering if i should have? i went over it with the amount of play, a bunch of times, my friend and i said it was ok to put in without the spacer...its kinda hard to disengage the klune... would that have anything to do with it?
I did mine several years ago and I'm going by my not so great memory so......
It just amounts to which way the thing needs to me spaced. If the shaft is too long and binds before the two boxes are bolted up you would need to cut the output shaft as was the case with mine. Too much play when bolted up and the small round aluminum spacer is cut to length and used. Measuring which you need can be a real PITA so good luck and be creative. The tough to shift thing is normal and after much use it will be easier to shift.
Got my old Jeep back, I sold it to my brother 2 years ago and he drop it off and said it's yours. I pulled the blown T/C and made good find a PnP and its all back togoether and working, SMOG and sold, just wanting for the buyer to bring the rest of the cash. While at PnP grab a couple CV for the D20 on the Scout.
Ronnie Scout 02-21-2006, 12:08 PM Yea, Ronny will really think he is something now that you classified him as a SOLID winch line anchor. :flipoff2:

So sad about the Jeep.... :flipoff2: Another victim of TM? What's wrong with driving to CO with the ARB engaged?
That honestly wasn't me serving as winch point. Might have been this guy, seen here serving as Scout 80 gerbil.:D
Theres better. I like Florance cause its 40 minutes from my house.
And you would know this how ?
Did you read about better places in a 4X4 mag or did you see some on the internet ?
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
harkinoff 02-21-2006, 12:20 PM I am finally getting Back In The Saddle again!! I am almost moved into my house at Eagle Mountain now. I got it almost totally repainted along with some cleaning up it needed. I am totally fucked on the garage thing , small two car, I'll have to start building this spring. The divorce is still dragging on....... We did sell and divide almost everything and have yet settle on our daughter Shelby... The Scout is still sitting under a tarp and hasn't been fired up for several months. I do have a big Moab trip planned in April, time to let loose and raise some hell.
binderbart 02-21-2006, 01:08 PM We had -18º both friday and saturday night. So that limited what I could do.
Saturday I went to pull the trail scout in and work on it. Wouldn't start , dead battery so I said screw it. Had plenty of other projects.
Started on the toyota. Went to pull the TPS and change it, that turned into pulling the throttle body and leaky radiator. As it sits now I'm trying to clean up the throttle body real good. Also put more paint stripper on the aluminum rims for the toy, I'm going to remove the black paint now too.
Couldn't go the whole weekend with out some scout work, so I popped the hood on the terra and re-tightened the loose valley pan bolts. Hopefully that will stop the oil leak, while I was in there I gave the engine compartment a good cleaning.
Sunday worked on the rims some more and cleaned up the shop.
Pictures are to big to post and I havent picked up a program to downsize them yet, so here are the links for the engine in the terra

Docfranco 02-21-2006, 03:58 PM I actually went to big bear and wheeled in our first decent snow. We ran Gold Mountain and then messing around trying to dig my rear tires in sheared my pinion shaft in the rear D44!!!??? My reworked deaver springs are a tad to short and the front shackle flipped back and while trying to jack the rig up it kept sliding around so in my stupid wisdom tried to brake stand and dig in the rear tires...BOOM went the rear pinion shaft.
Stupid u-joints should have gone first...WTF?? I know i am running more than enough torque...but still should not have sheared a rather new dana spicer pinion shaft...Now i have to really start thinking about a bigger rear axle...damit.

Shadow man 02-21-2006, 04:29 PM So sad about the Jeep.... :flipoff2: Another victim of TM? What's wrong with driving to CO with the ARB engaged?
That honestly wasn't me serving as winch point. Might have been this guy, seen here serving as Scout 80 gerbil.:D
Sorry, all you anchor points look the same to me. :D
The prob with the rear diffy was it was popping and grabbing. It was moving around a lot on the road for him. Tore it down and found a broken side gear, piston and a badly damaged clutch gear. I locked up the arb with a 3/16 keystock spacer and he drove back to Denver.
He also had a siezed RR shock on top of all the other damage he got.
That will teach the heeper not to run with us again. :smokin:
RustoleumWhite 02-21-2006, 07:55 PM and have yet settle on our daughter Shelby...
My $.02 on that Hark, disclaimered by not having to ever have to deal with any kind of divorce, fight all for hell to get primary custody, even if the ex is "cool" right now and things are amicable. After the courts get done with you (the male) the child support will likely sap up all your "extra wheeling money" and things will just suck.
Ask HOS. Go poor if you have to to get custody, then it would be her on the short end (have heard too many stories of apparently decent guys getting the shaft when it comes to custody).
Gen. Nonsense 02-21-2006, 08:02 PM And you would know this how ?
Did you read about better places in a 4X4 mag or did you see some on the internet ?
:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: I read about them in the General 4x4 section...I dont just hang out here and in Chit Chat :flipoff2: Actually from what I have seen on ride alongs, the Table Mesa area is much more fun.
Nice Scout 73??

scout254 02-23-2006, 12:32 AM Does finding a mid 80's chev 1 ton crew cab 4x4 make you jump up and down? :bounce2:
Well, I sure did.....hell ya. Dana 60, chev 350, auto, np205, and a 14ff rear. :D
Now I just have to drain the bank account again, and go get it.:smokin:

ih4ever 02-23-2006, 03:27 PM of course he was in it when it flipped over, but he hiked out well over a couple miles (he said) and it was flipped over for about 6hrs... he might as well stayed in it, he's a freakin idiot, thats exactly why you dont go wheelin by yourself...

Did you get any damage?
Yes it is hard to tell without seeing a pic of it before.
I finished my triple shifters for my doubler setup just before last weekend. . I used a broken Corvette LS1 valve spring to keep the shifters side loaded so they wont rattle. Worked perfect as I never noticed any rattling at all when I did the SDS run.

Rockabilly 02-23-2006, 05:38 PM Here's the story: The flop actually started out as a endo but I was lucky enough to be able throttle it back down. When the ass end came down it flopped on its side and slid for about another five foot or so. Everything was fine except for a torn brake line, which one of the guys I was with had an spare. Swapped it out, hopped my fat ass up and down on the hood a few times till I could see over it and finished out the day wheeling.

A few years ago I agreed to accept and preview/scan/sort/pick pictures for and IH calendar that Bill thebert was going to make. It never got done, as I didn't get enough high quality pics, limited inbox space, and short amount of time to pick good images. I wanted stuff without license plates, without a bunch of rando's (random people, had to keep the Super Troopers theme going :D) and without a bunch of plates/reflectors blowing the flash all out of proportion.

It sucks they go off of wages. Even if you have built in overtime, doesn't matter if that schedule changes, its what you currently make. I am now looking at using the FMLA benifits and start laying out on my overtime shifts, that and try to gather my mind up over all of this shit. Can't believe the stress this causing. Thanks for the heads up dude:cool2:

Yeah what Rusty said...:(
ih4ever 02-24-2006, 10:36 AM so why dont we start a calendar?? it would be pretty cool... it would actually be really sweet!!!
Snoopy 02-24-2006, 10:42 AM I don't have the time or the printing space for it...anyone else?
Snoopy 02-24-2006, 10:55 AM Ok, I just Googled this and it looks like $19 is the going rate for calendars, that may mean we'd need $25 per calendar when you figure in shipping a box of them to me, then whatever postage is on its way out.
Shadow man 02-24-2006, 05:05 PM Shadowman, tell me about your 3-stick, What cases are you running?
203/205. The shifters sit almost dead center over the 4l80. Levers fabbed out of 3/4 octagon bar-stock, oil impregnated bushings from Lowes, riding on a round 3/4 stainless barstock shaft. No rust to take out the bushings later. Just attach it to two brackets that come up from both sides of the tranny. Easily removable from the top and rebuildable.
With the constant preload provided by the valve spring, it keeps the shifters silent. ZERO rattles. Shifting linkage to the cases are 1/2 HC barstock heatreated and with 5/16 rod ends. SOLID. No deflection. Just click-click.
If you need a rad mount idea, I have the one on my Scout that is solid, NEAT and simple. 2 bolts hold it down.
Get your rig done!!! Lets go wheeling and get it on. :smokin:

Ok I'm game to put one together if I get help on what pics to use, maybe we can have some on-line voting system. the 12 top votes gets in. I'll check with my printer and see if he can match or beat the $19, maybe depends on pics, Let me know. I'll do the leg work, I'd love to see some thing like this for all of us to enjoy.
Rusty
Snoopy 02-25-2006, 10:57 AM Alright RustyE! I'm down with one. Just make sure they aren't too expensive. I'm thinking a 12x12 will work (12x24" hanging).
scout254 02-25-2006, 11:15 PM Finally got my new tow rig home. I'm going to have a hard time to not turn it into a parts vehicle:grinpimp: I still need to replace the flexplate, but it is sweet for the price I paid. It is a 84 K30 crew cab long bed 4x4.:D The front is a D60 with 4.10's, rear 10.5" 14 bolt, & not to forget that it also has a 350, Th400, and NP205 in it.....
All I need now, is a sweet flatbed to haul the scout around behind the chev.:cool2:

I guess it's time to get rid of my 95 wrangler, and 53 Willys wagon now. Too many rigs that seem to reproduce themselves.....:shaking: I need more space.
