: Marlin has issues!
yogiaz 04-02-2002, 07:37 PM You know... I know this post will get deleted... but right now I dont care!
Shane and I ordered 2 Marlin Crawler setups on Dect 7th. And every single week its been a different excuse. He has used so many excuses that he has started using some old excuses. Hmmm... lets see...
1. Very Busy
2. Waiting on 4.7 gears (blaming the vendor)
3. Still busy
4. Had an employee quit
5. Stull busy
6. Needs to write Tacoma install instructions (this took 4 weeks)
7. Yep... Still busy
8. Somebody hurt their hand or somethign? (Hope he is alright!)
9. Busy yet again
10. Now he is waiting on bolts (once again blaming the vendor)
11. Very Very Busy!
These are just some of the excuses that Shane and I have recieved when we call! 15 or 16 weeks of different excuses. On several occasions we have been told that the crawlers will ship out next week. And he would give us the tracking number after they shipped. But.. then another excuse pops up.
Any tips on getting the parts we ordered. Should I just show up at his doorstep and ask for them?
Im tired of people always coming to Marlins defense and creating more excuses for him. The plain simple truth is his service sucks. I know some of his excuses are honest mishaps and are out of his control. But geeze.... ship the stuff out already. If he cant get people their parts for 6 months like some people talk about. Then he needs to step up and be a man and admit that. Not lie to people and tell them their order will be shipped out next week for 4 months.
:mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3: :mad3:
And I seem to recall others stopping by since the first of the year and getting their parts... Didn't Brandon pick up a pile of the 4.7 gear sets for himself and some buddies?
If you guys orderd stuff back in December - and others got them before you and they ordered afterwards, that is just plain wrong.....
livermore2 04-02-2002, 07:47 PM well if you cant wait for him try Inchworm.

Yup, that's how he works, if U drop by U can buy others peoples orders! Should have read my posting on him for the last 4 years, I have been saying this, your fault u ordered from him, sorry. stop payment if u payed ask for your $$ back or if visa ect, talk to them.
Booger Weldz 04-02-2002, 07:51 PM inchworms just up the road in walnut creek!!
The Marlin Sheeple should be replying any minute now.... I know you are dying to post.... saying how GREAT he is
Come on Marlin - 16 weeks of excuses? Just tell it straight up, I think most people would be ok with that!
nobody listens to camo :D

Thats what Im saying... he should just be upfront about it and tell his customers that he is very very slow, and their order will take 6 months to deliver.
But everytime we get done talking to him... he makes it sound like we will get our order next week! Like I said before... I got one word for that... LIAR!
And as for going somewhere else... I dont know of anybody else who makes a dual Tcase setup for the Tacoma. So I guess I continue to wait.

Sure could if Inchworm made adapters for a Tacoma dual setup :flipoff2: I have a friend going the the same BS week after week! Sounds like the same excuses Yogi is gettting. I think it's ridiculous personally and wish some larger companies like AA, etc. would step up and they'd make a ton of cash! Hell over on TTORA there is a Tacoma SAS happening at least every month, and most would like to do a dual case setup to avoid have d-shafts done twice.

Unfortunately Marlin is they only one with the Tacoma adapters, if he really even has them. Or, maybe it was just that one for that Norcal guy.

I won't be accused of being sheeple, everytime I had a deadline for a run, I was able to get it from Marlin. Then again, I've always lived within 350 miles of Marlin.

I think Im ready for the road trip! But I dont know if I can trust that he wil have it there. I can see it now!
(on the phone) Yes.... your crawler is sitting here ready for you to pick it up.
(when I get there in person) Im sorry Ronn..... last night a robber came in and stold about 120 of my dual case crawler setups. He loaded them into a truck. The cops where chasing him when a Tornado touched down and swept him off into the distance. The coast gaurd later found the truck and the robber floating in the pacific off the shore of Hawaii. They were able to save the robber but the truck sank to the bottom of the sea. So I will have to assemble some more and ship it out to you next week!

ROTFLMAO or we would get the #6. Needs to write Tacoma install instructions so I can't give it to you yet excuse! If we can do a SAS on a Taco I think we can figure out how to install a crawler in one also without instructions!

chartdog 04-02-2002, 11:00 PM I ordered my V6 dual/ultimate the first week of December also. It arrived last week. I went through this several years ago with a single 4.7 case so I was somewhat prepared. The guy needs a business partner that understands business. He is an artist but then most artists are crazy and die broke.
FlatBroke1 04-03-2002, 12:19 AM Wow, I thought everyone thought Marlin was the shi!t. This makes it easier to buy an Advance Adapter dual kit from Allpro.

justmyluck 04-03-2002, 04:19 AM Need some advice on what to do.

I need the V6 adapter and just got of the phone with Marlin yesterday. He says he has'em in stock and ready to ship. I'm gonna pay with a m/order and already have the damn thing ready to go in the mail....(altough I didn't sign it yet with Marlins name!).
So what should I do??
I'm thinking of calling inchworm. I've emailed him a few times and he seems like a stand up guy.

Thanx Tom

If you "officially" placed an order with Marlin, at least call to cancel the order before you go to another vendor.
If not, go for it. :D

Still at a few months of R&D they will be WAY ahead of Marlins "schedule"...
Thanks for the good news.... ;)
Brandon 04-03-2002, 07:35 AM last time I called it sounded like he DID get a business partner - anyone know anything about this? I won't stand up for his reliability - simply cause he overextends himself. While your getting screwed he is bending over backwards for someone else. I did call a week ago and got some new guy that sounded like a "business partner" to me - sounds like people have been there since then - did ya meet this guy?
I wonder if this will turn things around..
Simply put he takes too much business and in turn can't finish half of that because he is on the phone with people. When I was there he was turning people down - sucks for them but that is what he needs to do atleast till he is all caught up!
He is a great guy, but for the first time I ordered elsewhere for something I could have gotten from him - my draglink and tie rod. Big Mike is a big help but also a big flake (I am still waiting to talk to you Mike, bout the directions we were gonna work out months ago) - I dunno what else to say - but good luck Marlin...

BrusselsLace 04-03-2002, 07:56 AM Marlin has been very upfront with me. More so than he really needed to be. I've have read all the other marlin posts and I knew that ordering from him was going to take a while. So I placed my order "early" (december). However, as far as I am concerned, the tacoma orders are just sitting in his shop collecting dust. I'm not basing that assumption entirely on my frustrations, but on conversations I have had with Marlin. Many times Marlin has told me that he is the only one that knows what to do with the tacoma orders, and until he makes it a priority, they won't get done. "I just need to make it a priority" has become a mantra for him. So in the meantime other customers are ordering the new 4.70:1 gearsets (which he brags about selling 100+ sets on his website) and new billet steering arms and getting them within a week of placing the order, while my order gets ignored (no offense to those that are gettin gears, etc., more power to ya)....
I sent an email to Jim over at Inchworm and he said that he just got a tacoma tcase (must be the one that showchucker sent over) and to check back with him in a couple months.
shane
Glenn 04-03-2002, 08:11 AM When I first got my 85 runner, the tcase was in need of repair. Since it needed some new gears and such, I wanted to install the 4.7's while I had it out... I called Marlin (cause I had heard all these good things about him). He told me his gear cutter was fubar and he couldn't get gears for 5 months or so. So, I asked about going the dual case route. I tried to be as polite as possible on the phone but he just acted like he wasn't interested in my business at all. In fact, he was quite rude.
So, screw him, I called Jack O'Brien over in Roseville. He was very cordial and talkative and he had 4.1's in stock. I took my tcase over to him the very next day and he had it all done by the end of the week. Jack is a retired engineer from McClellan AFB. He knows his stuff and loves to talk. I don't know if he's doing anything with Tacoma's but here's his phone number...

Brandon 04-03-2002, 08:32 AM Just to be fair, Jack was a total ASS when I talked to him, which is why I went with marlin. If JPeater was sold by it's originater I may have bought from him (Chris Collard). Jack did nothing but rip Marlin, and I have heard that from many people since. Marlin didn't do that, he simply showed me what he had to offer and said Jack had a good product plain n simple but both are plenty strong.
but anyone can be an ass if you catch em on the wrong day I guess

yup i am the only person to actually break a 4:7 gear. i don't see any changes in the new design that would have kept the new gear from breaking the way it did. even the new gear would have failed in my opinion.
yes to marlins gredit he buit me a new dual ultimate t case and delivered in in one week at a time when he supposedly didn't have any gears in stock and other were waiting months for gears.
you hit the nail on the head earler. i was getting first class service while others were getting screwed.
flip side of the coin is i have also waited months for parts from him

Domenic 04-03-2002, 02:44 PM Just buy from someone else, every vendor has issues, we are a minority market (rock crawlers), if you want better service buy a full size ifs mall crawler, everyone wants your business and will kiss your butt. Good luck :)
LostIt 04-03-2002, 03:14 PM Damn, this post is making me realize just how good of luck I've had with Marlin. Last summer When I started my SAS I wanted to do dual cases at the same time. Everyone told me I would have a long wait, but Marlin had the adapter with the reduction portion of another case to me in under two weeks. But due to unforeseen costs at school I was forced to send it back. Marlin gave me a full refund on it. A month or two ago I ordered a dual case setup with the 4.7 gears. It was a little late, but it still arrived in under 4 weeks.
Now granted these parts are not for a Taco, so I can't really compare my situation to some of the othes who have posted. If I was having as much trouble as some of you, I would definitely go with another manufacturer.
GETMRUTN 04-03-2002, 03:48 PM After reading all these post ripping Marlin, I must have been really lucky. I ordered mine Feb 28 and got the adapter two weeks later and installed. Sorry to hear that his business is really getting ripped on. OH WELL. GOT MINE!!:D

I talked to a guy named Ron on Thursday of last week, and he claimed Marlin had hired himself and a guy named Dan to turn the business around. I'd been waiting since January for a 23 spline MC07 and had gotten a different story every time I talked to Marlin. Allegedly, and I do mean *allegedly*, my crawl box shipped on Friday. If that's true, I should see it tomorrow. If not, I guess I'll be making another call...

He seems to be getting things in order and is putting order numbers on everything based on when they were placed (older orders getting top priority). I know for may disgruntled people out there it may be too little too late, but it does look like he has someone who understands buisness to run the buisness and let Marlin do the actual work.... I am sure it is a chore to straighten everything out, but it appears to be happening... You may want to give the new guy a call...
steveh 04-03-2002, 05:20 PM Well, I for one wish Marlin the best of luck. He needs someone to organize that place. We'll see!
Pappy 04-03-2002, 05:42 PM Another plug for Jim@Inchworm. Received my 4.7 case last Friday after nearly no wait. So what if they are AA gears? They work just fine! And he blew Marlin's price away.

INCHWORM??
Thanx Tom
GO INCHWORM !!!
Randyzuk 04-03-2002, 05:51 PM This is exactly why I bought my 4.7's from all pro.... they were at my door in three days after I ordered all the way to vancouver canada!! ... These horror stories of marlin make me wonder how he keeps customer and how people say his customer service is great! WTF is up with that:confused:
Brandon 04-03-2002, 07:55 PM I just hope they guys don't SCREW marlin..
livermore2 04-03-2002, 08:02 PM Inchworm had my 4.7s and 23 spline double case all ready to bolt in just as promised! :beer:s for Jim!
Domenic 04-03-2002, 08:05 PM I bought 4.7's and high steer from him last year, MC07 adpt. this year and they were delivered within 48 hours every time. I guess I was just lucky. I've called and talked to Marlin several times and he helped me when nobody else would. I'll give Marlin my business in the future every time...:usa:
CRAWLING82 04-03-2002, 10:26 PM I do understand were some of you guys are coming from. Marlin doesn't know shit about how to run a shop all he knows is that he is marlin crawler and that there is a lot of people that want his stuff, so thats what he does he tries to get them there parts and forgets thats he already has 500 other customers waiting for there shit. It's not the money he's after, if it was he would of closed shop a long time ago. In the mean time he's back and forth in the shop trying to find out were his head is and coaching his guys and seeing that his product is top notch before it goess out. Its not like he's trying to piss all of us off in fact he's TRYING to do the the opposite he's the only guy that i know that works 7 days a week 16 hours a day (well that's not working for him either). I have asked marlin to shut down the shop for a week or two so that he can catch up, well he says he would like to do that but he's scared to piss off any more people. Well with all of this said we basicaly have two option's we can say fuck marlin crawler (which would be pretty sad since he has basicaly dedicated his life to us)Or we can all come together like REAL MEN and figure out a way to help the guy.
Yes, marlin does have a new guy working for him he was the parts manager for toyota some shop in the frezno area. I was there on monday and it seems to me like he knows what he's doing. the office is starting to get orginized work orders and such.
I know there's a lot pissed off people but come on the guy is doing every thing he can. he's not trying to piss us off.
Bob Williams 04-03-2002, 10:44 PM I've always had good customer service from Marlin. If you want to know the lengths he'll go to for a customer, PM me and I'll let ya know.
e cliff 04-04-2002, 12:04 AM Go with InchWorm, nuff said! hey seebass it is hard to make you realize how i want to beat you sencesless but i can't, i also like the pbb too. i worked on the first two taco crawlers (mc09) and both times i stayed up untill 4 A.M. in the mornig right aside marlin so that the customer would be able to go home the next morning.
Its not like he's trying to piss all of us off in fact he's TRYING to do the the opposite he's the only guy that i know that works 7 days a week 16 hours a day (well that's not working for him either). i couldn't have put it any better.
and last time i was there about a mounth and a half ago marlin was still trying to get the adapter from his machinist. and when we put the crawler in robert allgoods taco we had to nock on the machine shop door and pick it up, what a pain in the ass:eek:
and one more thing snowchucker has a tacoma v6 adapter to a gear drivine t-case( altamate crawler) so jim woundn't have much to copy. dont get me wrong jim is a nice guy, and i have bought and sold things to him several times.
i will let all you fawkers finish bashing marlin,if it wasn't him it would be some one else..

If you "officially" placed an order with Marlin, at least call to cancel the order before you go to another vendor.
If not, go for it. :D
I officially placed an order for 4.7:1 gears back in December. I got tired of waiting so I called up and cancelled my order at the end of January. I ended up getting them through All-Pro. Marlin's shop called me at the end of February to tell me the gears were in and they were getting ready to ship them to me. I told the guy I cancelled my order 4 weeks ago and not to bother shipping them unless they were free. He asked why and I said I got tired of waiting and got'em somewhere else. He then proceeded to tell me how these new gears are far better than any I could get anywhere else. WHATEVER!
Well I thought that was the end of it until I got another call in March from Marlin's shop saying my credit card wasn't working and they couldn't ship the gears until it cleared ( i had paid it off and cancelled the card) I told the guy the whole story I had cancelled my order twice now and this makes the third time.
So I guess what I’m saying is "Officially canceling your order doesn't mean dick"!

Thats all nice and all...and we all appreciate the hard work....but what about the run around alot of us are getting? I would just like a straight answer for once on when these are going to be ready.... I have called almost weekly since December...every week the same thing....call me next week....well the last time I called he said call me in a month...sheesh...
OOP'S 04-04-2002, 06:05 AM It sounds like you Taco guys are going to have two players in the field as soon as Inchworm gets his going. Me I will stick with Marlin, have had nothing but great service and got my things when promised. :D
Brandon 04-04-2002, 07:38 AM I support Marlin, but reading these posts I don't think people are bashing him, really they are just telling their story...
We could start a new thread with ONLY good things about marlin and it would go on for pages..
I know I could write a page myself.

I don't think it'sbashing either, just plain frustration.
I have never bought any big ticket item from Marlin, just a few small misc. items. I do however appreciate all he's done for the Toyota folks.
This thread is really about the Tacoma guys wanting to make their SAS rigs crawl, and as of right now Marlin is the only one offering this. We pre-taco wheelers have more options and have the freedom of going elsewhere if company "X" drops the ball, and get damn near the same products, but the taco group is stuck waiting. I'd be bitching up a storm to if I was told a bunch of stories just to get my hopes up, then hear the same excuse next week.

I think the best thing the new Toyota Service Manager working for Marlin can do for him would be to take his phone away.

Wonder what? That someone sees an existing market that is not being properly by the current supplier so they are gonna give it a shot and see if they can do it better?
Seems like everyday business to me....
Or are you trying to somehow claim that someone is COPYING someone here?
BTW - the sad, sad, part about this is all of these stories are from people who have TREID to make things work with Marlin. None of these people set out to get screwed, and went with Marlin because they knew he was a "good guy".
I hope something changes, but I know those of us from the old ORC mailing list have been saying that Marlin needed to get things in order YEARS ago, and nothing has happened yet....
Best of luck to him... if we think he is popular now, imagine if he did not have such a horrible product delivery reputation
I dare say there would be little need to shop for crawler adapters and accompanying Toyota accessories ANYWHERE else...
Amazing the potential he holds right *there* - yet has been unable to utilize thus far :(

I wouldn't say COPY (or claim to KNOW anything), but I would assume that Inchworm at least has seen a picture of Marlin's adapter. If I was to build (I'm not that skilled) an adapter and there was one already on the market, I would see how it was built. If it had short coming, I would improve upon it and learn from their mistakes.
Yes, it is good business.
I was just wondering what came first... the chicken or the egg?
OOP'S 04-04-2002, 12:02 PM Well Taco guys if it was not for Marlin you would still be bouncing and breaking shit and saying “Man I wish I could get some crawler gears”. Hopefully he can get his shit together and start getting the product to you. Once he does you will have a quality product. As far a copying that is the way Marlin and JP Eater (Chris C.) started out Marlin has just refined it a bit. As far as Jack, I think he just sits around getting fatter. As far as you guys that go elsewhere to get your stuff, please do not call Marlin when you have a problem, it makes it hard for a paying Marlin customer to talk to him.:D

There's also a flip side. He could have gone down a worse path.
I've got a Birfield Eliminator for sale.
Best of luck to Marlin... and to myself. I'm placing an order w/ him VERY soon.

speakin outa my ass here - but I thought he SOLD those, not copied them? Then he came up with a NEW model that was short, the long ones WERE someone elses I thought, hence the icelandic crawler name?
I dunno really, pretty sure the short idea was all his - don't doubt the long one wasn't. Big deal, they don't call it the MARLIN crawler for nuttin..

The new guy does appear to be making big strides to get things straightened out on the buisness side. Friday the next set of 4.7 gears should be through customs and begin filling orders......
I was not in a hurry when i ordered my crawler, but i had a ton of questions and Marlin spent the time to go over it all in detail.
Unfortunatly i agree with a previous post that the best thing that could be done is to take the phone away from Marlin. He is too helpful and is will to go into detail on stuff when his time would be better spent in the shop. :D :D

Gozuki 04-04-2002, 08:13 PM Marlin is WAY into the tech side of his business, and unable to keep up w/ the business side of it... He is a great guy, maybe swamped with orders though... I have wheeled with him, and BSed enough with him to know that he would not screw you on purpose, and would in fact give you his own shirt.... I would not give up on him, see how it turns out, I know he has dedicated the last 10 years to hardcore wheelers, when many were only after the $$...
Well I am ready to get my dual set up complete and with it being $1235 from Inchworm and $1348 from Marlin....MC07-U with 4.7:1 I sit here wondering how long it will be to get this to my door..or if I should run down there...I want it all ready so I am going this way and they are close in cost so its no big deal $wise....but now I am worrying a bit with Marlin....Someone push me one way or the other....:D

Yup, that pretty much sums it up...
However today the frustration is gone. Ron over at Marlin's shop just called me and they are shipping my tacoma crawler out today! He insisted on covering the shipping charges and even offered to ship it over night. I told them that wasn't necessary and just to ship it ground. So I will have it the middle of next week. :) :) :)

I have bought from him in the past too and have waited. I would still buy from him again if he can catch up. I don't think anyone here thinks he is a bad guy, he's not. I wouldn't have known to put a turbo tranny behind my v6 if it weren't for him. They just don't want to wait months which is totally understandable. Business is business and people will go elsewere if the service is better and faster, that's just the way it is, nothing personal.

I believe his new gear cutter is in Japan, actually.
if they come out of japan they will the unkin gears, heard nothing but good things about they and they are as strong as all fawk.
although you need to grind alot out of your tcase to get them in, i would hate to see a 5.2 set installed and the tcase wall thinckness,
