: Any negatives on all coil suspension????
Poorboy 04-02-2002, 07:40 PM Just trying to decide on what new lift to put on the Zuk. I have heard alot of good things about the coil suspension but I was wondering if there were any drawbacks or negatives. It is either spend $1000 on a YJ SPOA or $1500 for a coil suspension.
Thanks.
zukiboy 04-02-2002, 07:56 PM i think your numbers are a little skewed there dude:flipoff2:
Poorboy 04-02-2002, 08:47 PM No not really buddy, check out rocky roads website and you will see what I mean newbie.:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
zukiboy 04-02-2002, 08:55 PM sorry dude.....just tryin to be an ass like everyone else on this board......i just think that for $1000 you could do just about everything needed for a COMPLETE yj conversion (springs, hangers, brake lines, steering, shocks.....etc.).....if i'm not mistaken $1500 only gets you the controll arms and springs basically for the coil kit.....shocks, steering, brake lines, stuff like that not included.....that stuff adds up....and will make that $500 differnce in your calculations a lot more BIGGER
:flipoff2:
BTW......RRO smokes pole

coils schmoils!! i say evolve. go with a standard spoa, maybe some cj leafs in the rear and rears up front conversion, you get plenty of flex and is is el cheapo, then you can spend your money on traction aids like lockers and gears. coils are not worth the money unless you compete. you can get just as much performance from a leaf 1/4 elliptical setup!!
zukiboy 04-02-2002, 09:14 PM it's all about bein a newbie:rainbow: :rainbow:
Poorboy 04-02-2002, 09:24 PM Damn straight, it is the attack of the newbies!!!! ya I see how all that could add up with the coil kit. What about the YJ kit. For the money and lift it would be a good one to go with. Now it is all up to where to get it and who has the cheapest price.
Poorboy.
Gotta drink some  to think right.
M.Martian 04-02-2002, 10:17 PM hey fatty,

Sarcastro 04-02-2002, 11:03 PM Whats wrong with coils? I dont have any thats whats wrong with em!! Har!:D
Seriously now, if you have the shop and the expertise to install the kit, just go with what spence says.. spoa in the front, spidertrax in the rear.. allot less expensive and ...
DAMN!!! look a that handling...
:trooper: Cut the chatter red two!:trooper:

gregzuki 04-03-2002, 07:06 AM hey go for coils. I built a custom coil suspension for the rear of my samurai, If you have a welder and some welding skills then it is very easy to build one, My setup only cost me 250 bucks or so CND. Plus 80 more for new longer shocks. how ever my setup is not a flex monster but it rides a Hell of a lot better then springs, I mostly do trial riding and mud running, this setup is perfect for a nice controled ride. The setup could be built differently to alow for more flex.
Check out www.angelfire.com/ns2/brookst/coil.html
I soon hope to have nmew pics up on my site which show me really flexing with my rear springs up front!.
fatkid 04-03-2002, 11:12 AM I can't think any reason not to run a coil set up other than it has to be done right in order for it work well and the cost of all the materials...:)
0ILBURNER 04-03-2002, 02:32 PM Negatives:
Coil spring suspensions in general offer less body roll control vs. leaf springs.
Construction is complicated & expensive vs. leaves.
Many kits utilize spherical rod ends (aka Heim joints) which will sqeak eventually.
Positives:
Coils offer superior ride quality and obviously lots of suspension travel if the arms do not bind.
Another bonus is that approach/departure angles are better with coils.
"Johnny Joints" are a joint option which will not make noise, and are rebuildable/greasable. (pricey, tho)
You can draw experience from the automotive manufacturers for reference. In the 'old days' most 4x4's came with leaf spring suspensions front & rear. They rode kinda rough but got the job done & are very durable. Now-a-days the idea is to have a more plush ride, so most everything has coil springs. Look at some of the kits for the TJ that flex well - a lot of technology goes into controlling a flexy coil suspension.

actually the TJ example is a good one to find out strenghts/weaknesses of this design...
a friend of mine has one with a 4" lift kit and it flexes like crazy ... he gets 40" of articulation from his tj and actually won 3 rockcrawling tournaments down here with a stock rear lsd!!!!
no BS! ... the guy is good...
but it makes me sick to look under the TJ frontend and see a total of 5 links there !!!! its like in the woods ....
so complexity is def. an issue... and the number of links/bars he has broken ... too many to mention ;o)
so bottom line... it flexes like crazy, but i cant imagine this type of jeep in the year 2040 ...
but i can perfectly imagine running a nice m38A1 from the 60ies ...
so its performance vs. longivity
later,
alfred
