You will at least need a green sticker

technically since it's a county road, I'd think you would need to have it licensed. But I doubt that you'd ever get hassled....

I would advise you to go to a local DMV and talk to someone at the counter about the green sticker reg. Then do it again, and maybe a few more times. Try to pull some decent info out of all the different answers you get, then read up on it and get ready for a confrontation.

Not intending to be a smartass - that is what it is like unless you get lucky right up front. I have been trying to explain to our local DMV office that it is perfectly legal to go green sticker with a 4wd vehicle but they don't seem to get it, even when I walk over to thecounter and pull out their own pamphlet on green sticker registration to show them the nice little picture of a jeep on the front.

Finally gave up after realizing that I wanted to be able to flat tow. Maybe not a direct answer to your question, but I feel better.

Anyway, I think that without street reg or OHV reg you are going to get nailed at some point. You can't even get in to an OHV park without one or the other.

I've never been to the Rubicon, but since when do Police have rigs that are capable of that sort of thing?

I've been into Spider Lake on ATV's before, and once a guy on a motorcycle checked us for green stickers.

I have dual registration on my Jeep - licensed and green stickered. Mostly so I don't have to pay the "Adventure Pass" crap. The lady at the DMV was a little confused, but we looked it up and it's done.

In Colorado (I don't know California's laws, but I'd be surprised if they're more lenient) if you're operating on public land, the vehicle has to be registered. If it's a street legal vehicle (all my junk is street legal) it can be plated or green stickered; if it's not street legal (ATV, snowmobile, etc) it has to be green stickered.

The BLM whacked a buncha guys last summer down on Indy for having un-tagged trailer queens; made 'em go green-sticker 'em before they'd allow 'em to offload from the trailer. Threatened a several-hundred-dollar ticket if they offloaded without tags of some sort.

Since all my junk (even the Mantis) is registered, insured, and street legal, it's plated as a normal vehicle. Considering that OHV green stickers are what, $10 or $15 a year, vs. (around here) something like a $250 fine for running unregistered, it seems like cheap insurance to me. Plus, green sticker vehicles are non-emissions anyway, so you just go in, pay your fee, and go play. Or do like I did, tag your street junk in a non-emissions county, and do the same, to get your plates. Might not be an option in Cali though.

Vermont will send you a plate in the mail for street use in any state and they require no insurance proof.... all through the mail. Alot of dirtbikes are getting around the red sticker thing this way...

Do a search in the dirt bike section... I posted a link to Vermonts DMV there a while ago......

I got hassled in Rubicon Springs by the caretaker when I had the Flat Fender. He asked me where my plates were. I said it was not registered, then he asked for the green sticker. I told him the truck does nto exhist. He told me I have to have it registered because it is on a county road. Then he walked up and checked out the rig, loved it, and told me e would let me go, but to have it all legit when I came back. That never happened. Dude, if you need tags for a Toy, I have some 83 tags at home.

Hey Scott:

I am in Fort collins right now, I actually met you last year in loveland at the moose lodge at the meet and greet little expo thing...anyways, my point is:

you mentioned above about registering plates in a non-emmisions county.....where in colorado would that be and how would I go about doing that? I am not looking to do this now, just need it for future refrence.

That'd be Weld County, for one... but you gotta live there in order to tag your junk there. Guess what one of my criteria was when I was house shopping? :)
Most of the mountain counties are that way too (Grand, I know, 'cause nothing passes sniffer at 9k feet), and several others. Certain municipalities are emissions-required anyway--if you commute into Greeley, Ft. Collins, Loveland, Boulder, Denver, etc., you're required by that municipality to comply with their emissions laws. It's funky, but Ft. Collins, for one, will ticket you for having a vehicle in Ft. Collins on a regular basis (more than 30 days a year, regardless of where it's tagged) if it doesn't have current Colorado emissions. I don't know how they figure it's legal, but somehow, they get away with it.

I'm from Okla. and plan on running the Con in June. Okla. doesn't require vehical inspections any more. What's up with these green & red tags? Is this something I'm going to need in advance?

If you have a street registered vehicle you'll be fine. The "green tag" is a california off hiway registration, it's mainly used for ATV's and such, it's not required on street registered vehicles...

what about a farm use tag or a slow moving vechile triangle...not sure about out there but in Va you can buy a farm use tag from the dmv thats legal, buy one from a truck stop or country store, or just spray paint farm use on the back of whatever...i use to ride a rm 125 on the street when i was like 12 and just took one of those orange reflective slow moving vechicle tirangles and pinned it on the back of the shirt/jacket i was wearing...never got hassled, but then again i never saw a cop :)
