I got a box of bolts from my dad, who got them from his dad, so they are probably almost 50 years old.
Anyway, at first I thought this was just a piece of safety wire, but now I'm sure it's a locknut. It works really well too! The cool thing is you can tighten it with your fingers, but it will not back off.
Anyway, I just though some of you guys might like to see it.

That's Cool! Looks like it would be a real PITA to get off with a wrench though.
Haven't seen 'em before but I would sure like to see 'em again....in my garage!
Looks like they would work better then most the stuff out there now!
That is a really neat setup, I hope someoen has info or a source on them.

I was just messing with them, and they come off with about the same force as a regular lock nut. Clean the threads really well too! All the bolts in the box are grade 5.
If the threads are clean, you can screw them on by hand, but not very easily. Using a wrench or ratchet, you don't really feel any resistance going on. Just enough to make the ratchet work really well.
My grandfather died when my dad was just a kid, so I'm not sure what he did for a living. I'll ask my dad when I see him a couple days. I'm pretty sure they came from where ever he worked.
My guess is they were more expensive to produce than the locknuts in use today, so they were probably discontinued.

I don't know if it is the exact same thing but that looks similar to an aircraft style. I saw some that they passed a single wire through each nut.
