I am going to buy my first diesel truck soon, but I am not sure what to look for when I check some out. I don't know what kinds of diesel related problems to look out for. I found one that I want to go look at. It is a 99 Dodge 2500, 24v cummins, 5 speed, 4x4, extended cab, 117K. It is at a car lot where they sell several cummins trucks. The guy said he didn't know any history of it and didn't have any records for it. He said it is in great shape and has an edge chip in it. That is the only thing he could tell me about it. I plan on running a carfax report on it. Other than that, when I go check it out what should I watch out for?

Thanks

If it has a Edge Comp box on it it could need a clutch soon. Might need a injection pump soon if the lift pump isn't working. I'd check the fuel pressure on that one before I bought it.

Does it have a fuel pressure gauge?

Not from the factory. If it does, it's an add-on.

Like Gary said, no. IMHO with the price of a injection pump well over $1000 you might want to invest into one of these for your "shopping".

Once the lift pump goes the injection pump is soon to follow. You might still buy the truck with a bad LP but at least it would be nice to know and give you something to haggle about on the price.

You can plug this into the shrader port buy the pump and see if the LP is still working. Would take 2 mins to do.

Thanks. My other choices for a truck would either be a 12v Cummins, or a 99+ PSD f250. I found a few others, but this one seems like the best deal so far. I also found a good deal on a 97 2500 that I am going to call about. Anything to ask about on this one? Thanks.

The 12v trucks are preferred by alot of people. They are easier to get power out of. Most of em don't get the quad cab style rear doors though. In case that matters to you.

You might want to send in an oil sample.
