I believe that the Cj's in general have a more narrow axle width than the later jeep models, but it seems Ive read about "narrow track" in reference to the CJ's as well. Whats the deal here? Were there certain year models that had a more narrow axle width than others? Also, if anyone knows, what were those dimensions (narrow track and regular ) . thanks

Limpymilk, thanks,
Looks like the narrow track wheel to wheel is--front (53 inches) rear (50.5 inches)
and the wide track wheel to wheel is --front (56 inches) rear (54.6 inches)

spring pads are 28 inches front on both narrow and wide and 36 inches rear on both narrow and wide.

Is it common that the wheel to wheel distance is wider in the front axle than the rear? If so, why is this? steering??? easier to follow than lead?? please explain

Limpymilk, thanks. seems that the narrow track is 53 inches front and 50.5 rear and the wide track is 56 inches front and 54.5 rear.

In both cases the front wheel to wheel distance is greater than the rear. Is this common. If so why. please explain. thanks

Yes the early cj's 46 to 81 had narrow track and the later years 81 to 86 had the wide track axls it had nuthing to do with frunt and rear axles.

on all 4wd vehicles the front is wider than the rear.....it helps it track better going down the road and gives it a better turning radius

Sorry, but not all 4WD vehicles are this way. Jeep XJs, YJ's and TJ's are all 60.5" front and rear.
