: SM420 swap meet special question...

I did a search, nothin' close.

I bought this SM420, adapter, and a 'Cruiser T-case at a swap meet last year. I have a flatfender with a SBC and it bolted right in w/ a new x-member. The problem is the case hangs almost as low as my diffs! I crawled under a few 'Cruisers at school last year to make sure that is what I have (Oh! Hey I just was checkin' out your transfer case, where'd you get the......?). I don't recall them hanging that low.

My question is this, if I were to redrill the adapter and rotate the housing, say 15 degrees, would there be any problems? I am thinking there may be a lube problem? Shifters aren't in it yet and I am sure I will have to modify them anyhow, if that could be a problem. Am I forgetting anything?

Thanks,
Bryan

I don't think there would be any problems, other than the front t-case yoke clearance.

My t-case sits nearly level with the frame rails on my cruiser.

It depends on which adaptor plate you have. The Extreme Bends plate rotates the T'case output down about 10 degrees to avoid having to grind the side of the transfer case. The Warden's style plates rotate the T'case less, so that the bottom of the case is about 1 inch lower than the bottom of the sm420.

If you have an EB plate, you can probably just sell it and buy the other style. You can see both plates from lnks on ih8mud.com.

Relocating the x-member might be an easier solution.

No problem its all just "splash" lubrication in the t-case but before you modify the adaptor look at the angle real close some f the adaptors are that way so the front output U-joint will miss the side of the 420's case so you might want to run it like that on mine I had to grind on the yoke and the case to gain clearance.

My 'case hangs down about 6" below the rails, but that is on a CJ2A. I saw a 'Cruiser out in the parking lot, I'll crawl under after class, I'm suppose to be learning C++ right now.:D

I just got through the same problem. My plate is from extreme bendsand they clocked TONS to clear the reverse hump on the tranny to avoid any grinding. I would rather use the grinder personally.

Yeah Greg I would prefer the grinder, but I prefer not to have to do that! Did you rotate it back where you would like it?

As for the BMX brigade, rock on! You ought to check out what Tin Bender the :bender: lover did to his collar bone in General chat! I'm glad I am not the only one that didn't grow out of BMX!

My adapter is about 6-7" long. This is the only way I can mount a x member to the tranny/'case assembly. I was checkin' out ih8mud and the adapters there where all of 1" long! In the Flatfender I could use the extra 5-6"! What gives, any idea of which adapter I have? All I saw on ih8mud were the plate style adapters.
