: IFS drive axle swap

Anyone have any hints on swapping out the drive axles on an IFS truck (I have an '86 4Runner). Can the studs on the inner shaft be removed to
allow easier removal and installation of the drive axle?

It might work. Don't loosen it *TOO* much, though... or it'll fall off. Look what my IFS did when I tried to fix it:

Yes they can, I did that, but it was still a PITA IMO, so I copied what Dr. Evil did, or did he copy me

Oh, and BTW, ths board is not a fan at ALL of IFS questions. FYI read the FAQ's

Tejota, you will never meet more nicer people than Dr. Evil and Bones on this site. Don’t let them fool ya, they still have IFS and are just afraid to come out of the closet like they did with their :rainbow: ways. So ask away, ask all the IFS questions you like. In fact, PM them, they really like that :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Come awn Bertha!! What have I ever done to you man! Hell he probably came here cuz outdoor wire and ORC are down :D

Note to self, shut off PM mode :flipoff2:

I don't really have a problem with IFS questions. It's just when people come in and reply flaming them (not ribbing 'em like Bones & I did) until they get all pissed off and it becomes another rant post. That's what gets tiresome.

There you go, he gots our answer. Can we rag on you some more now? ;)

You know, I think that's one thing that is *very* under-appreciated about solid axle swaps? You can see and get to everything from underneath now. Somehow my IFS seemed to block acess to the bottom of the vehicle from the fan shroud all the way back to the tranny. A part of it might be that my rig is like 10 feet tall now (I can sit upright under the oil pan) but man, that sure will be nice in the future when I gotta work on an idler pulley and don't have to lay down , or even little things like the oil filter.

I prefer to just pop the lower ball joint loose, then crank the steering to that side.

Yes you can. To me these suckers were a bitch to change, but I watched Beebs change one out in about 15-20 minutes without even jacking the rig up and it had the stock studs still in it.:rasta:

I popped the studs out and flipped them around instead of getting new bolts...They come out easy now, just have to turn the wheel some to get them to clear the shock without jacking up the front end...

there is a special way you can wedge that half shaft into your ass, then itll be really easy to pry those studs out.

unless it isnt gripped tightly enough.............

Yep, its pretty easy once you figure it out. Gotta wiggle it out JUST right. 20 minutes and I was taking my time too. :D

Works best if you have the weight of the truck on the suspension... (that's why I did it w/o jacking it up or even taking off the tire).

The way I did mine was to remove the four bolts that hold the lower ball joint to the lower A arm. This for me was the fastest way. Good luck!
