Anybody welded a 14-bolt this way 14-bolt welding (http://www.coloradok5.com/welded14bolt.shtml) ??
Did it work?? Has it held up?? Would you recomend it??
If the 14-bolt spool or ARB doesn't come about soon, I may try this when I build my next set of axles. But don't want to do it if its a trashy idea.
NO, I do not want a Detroit.

I would recommend that you weld it the way the ColoradoK5 mentions...the carriers for these things are ~$250 each compared to Dana's ~$50 each.... I welded just the spiders on mine and it has worked great so far....of course, it hasn't left the garage yet either:(

My friend Lara(aka Muddin) is the one who wrote the article. She has been running hers liek that now for over a month with no probs... She got the method from another friend of mine Rene (aka tRustyk5). Rene is a fabricator/welder by trade and he has been running his like this for a long time! Rene isn't up on here becuase he cant get his username to work, but try over at CK5 and I am sure he would answer any questions you have, he is a great guy!

did you use the same method?? Looks OK, and saves the carrier, but will the shock load grenade the gears and make a mess over time..
I may just cruise over to CK5 and ask around...
I *really* want an ARB...... :(

I personally don't recommend it, I have driven vehicles with this kind of mod done and had handling issues, there is always some slop in the set and when you start a corner your turn in feels normal, then all of a sudden you need to tighten the turn to get around cause the welds have hit.
I welded mine directly to the case and left out the middle gear assembly. my thinking is if one weld lets go I still have one wheel drive in the back.
where the heck do you pay $250 for a 14 bolt carrier? I can get an entire axle out of the wreckers here for that, they come under almost every truck chev built over 1/2 ton.

Well, I didn't leave a gap like they mentioned..I didn't want the shock load. So, I filled the gaps sp that my spiders don't move at all. And, yes you can get a carrier out of every wrecking yard..I realize that...but I happen to have 4.56's, so I would have to find this one particular carrier...I guess, it might be different if I went to deeper gears because they use the 4.10 and down case...either way, I will slap in a spool or mini spool sometime over the summer.

Your best bet is go to CK5 and PM Rene (aka tRustyk5) He has been running his like this for a while and it is his daily driver.... I guess alot of guy in his neck of the woods do it like this!

im running it like this---the handeling characteristics are better than a locker IMO, but why would anyone care----have had no problems.
