I'm throwing a 14-bolt in the rear of my '87 YJ, and was wondering what the best way is to get the stock Chevy perches off the axle. They are like a solid block and they don't look like a cutting torch would work really well. Just grind it off?

angle grinder witha cutting wheel...

cut as much off as you can....

then put a grinding wheel on it and grind the little bit that's left off there....

I used the torch to get it close and then a grinder on one set and tried cutting the welds with a cutting wheel in an angle grinder on another set. If I were doing it a thrid time I'd use the cutting wheel and a hammer.

Hacksaw, file and sand paper. Takes a while, but looks nice when done.

I use a thin cutting wheel to cut/fatigue the welds a little, cut the perches in half parallel to the axle tube and hit it with the air hammer. It makes pretty quick and easy work of it.

when i cut off my perches, i used an angle grinder to grind out the welds, being careful not to gouge the tubes too bad, then tok a 15 pound sledge to them.... Blam Blam *PLING!* one down... repeat

Thanks for all the tips. I'll let you know how it goes. After my broken and cut fingers heal. Sounds like it is going to be busted knuckle paradise in my garage this week....
