I am looking for info on axle swaps into an early CJ. The year is around mid 70's. Not entirely sure. Do I need to find out the exact model? I would look to put a 9" and a d44 in it.

your rear should be a pretty straight up swap the front you will have to outboard your springs. then don't forget shockmounts and steering linkages and all the other little things

Thanks. Any info on the housing length or spring perch lengths? I would also want a disc brake 44. Would a scout or any other bolt in? Help would be useful thanks.

Your frame width is ~27" wide. scout/yj/ full width is closer to 32". So, you will have to outboard your springs if you do not want to do custom axle work.

IF you want to stay narrow, you can narrow the long side of a waggy axle or scout & it works slick.

If you want to go wider, there is two general paths you can take. One is to outboard.
The other is to find a chevy or dodge D44 housing and shorten the long side to waggy or scout width. Depending on whether you use dodge/ chevy on the short side and passenger drop waggy or driver drop waggy inner axle on the long side will put you in a wms range of 61-64 wms.

You can search in jeep forums and the toyota landcruiser (same frame width) forums for ideas.
I chose to narrow a chevy D44 and run a custom inner shaft on an FJ40 project I am building.

One thing to consider about the rear of a mid '70's CJ is if it has the Quadratrac t-case. If so, your rear diff is offset thus limiting your swap options. Not a big deal, as it is easy to find a mid '70's Waggy with an Qtrac and an offset rear D44 to swap in.

Do a search on my name. There are alot of photos of my jeep with waggy axles under it.

The rear is a no big deal, the front you either have to narrow a chevy 44 or go with a waggy front end and outboard the springs. If your doing it I say go 60wms to wms axles, the extra stablitity is a good thing on the narrow jeeps

Depending on the year of your CJ 5 you may already have a rear Dana 44 on it. You can narrow a front D 44 from a Wagoneer and you don't have to outboard the springs. You can use the disc brakes and keep the original master cylinder.
