View Full Version : How about a TOTW? (or M?)

I know there are TOTWs in other forums, but I was thinking something more IH specific. Here goes.
Those of you with Scouts that were born with saddle tanks, what have you done with them? Keep them, fix them, convert them, ditch them, what?
Both of mine developed pinholes due to rust, so I ran my fuel line to a 5 gallon can in the fenderwell. It sucked having to fill it every day, but it got me around until I bought a cell. I wanted a 15 gallon cell, but the one I bought turned out to be bigger than that. It is mounted in the bed up against the cage.

I am not sure what the gas stations will say when I go to fill it, due to it being inside the passenger compartment and all.
So, what have you done?

ditched'm sold them on BB for a premium. Then installed a SII tank in the rear. But you gotta have an SOA and for the rear axle to clear.

My brother still uses the saddle tanks on his 800, but he added a THIRD tank. He got a 19 gallon Scout II tank (we had it sitting around) and stuffed it up between the frame in the back, like where it rides in a SII. Then he set it up with the filler neck and everything so there is another one there on the drivers side. So, he can carry 39 gallons of gas at once now. It's pretty sweet. There is some fancy plumbing but it isn't rocket science.

why are people ditching them, just cause they spill on sidehills or ? Just curious cause I was planning on keeping mine..

It was easier to wire/hose one tank than two. I used a cell.

C'mon Brandon.... put that higher book learnin' to work. You don't have to do what everyone else does.... unless you got your degree in Sheepleology.:flipoff2: Engineer a solution that works for you.

Still using both saddle tanks, but will be adding a fuel cell in the bed. That 350 sucks up fuel like nothing else...:shaking:

It wasn't a problem that I was aware of, I was just wondering why people were ditching the stock tanks, I've yet to actually drive it with the side saddles so I am not aware of any issues and was hoping to be enlightened. I am building a 5.0 Scout that does not have a chevy front end and well I really am not exactly following anyones build.
My last jeep had a tank underneath and when that ran out I had two jerry cans both plumbed with a small toggle switch so when the bottom tank underneath ran out I could just toggle the switch and be in business. It was nice for the long drive from CO to CA :)
I will be running an in-line electric pump, so with two tanks I will more less run a low pressure pump from one tank to the other and a high pressure from the main line to the fuel rail.. most likely :grinpimp:

Did you mount that under the bed like a SII?
The only issue I had, beside the leaks, was that it was a pain to fill up.

yea its mounted like a scout 2 but i have it backwards so there is a little more clearance at the axle. fills on the passenger side

Brandon, The joint between the filler neck and the body goes bad and if you have more than 7 gallons in the tank it leaks out till you have 7. the rubber necks themselves are fragile too. Be carefull during fillups you dont ram the gun tip right through. And they get pin hole leaks on the bottom and sides from all the crap that gets trapped inside the body. Spend some time on the BB, you might learn something:p
