I am in the middle of putting my front end back together and I need to change my drivers side axle u-joint.
Trouble is I have used the biggest hammers available and large punches and it still wont budge.
I am gonna try and heat it up a little and see if it eill let loose.
I am glad this didnt happen on the trail,by the way this is on a scout 2 dana 44 front.
Also does anyone have any extra front axle shafts they want to part with?
please let me know
Thanks

I used my ball joint press to remove the old U's. I torqued the press down, then used a 5lb to lightly tap the clamp. THe shock popped the U's loose. Harbor Frieght sells the ball joint press kit.

You did remove the C-clips?

Just changed mine.. stubborn things.

I tried my HF ball joint press and didn't have much success.

On one I put the axle, a 1.25" socket "backer" and a 3/4" socket "pusher" into my vice and cranked down on it.. used my Hi-Lift on the vice handle... finally got the U-joint loose.

On the second one I cranked down on the vice, and then remembered jdjanda's "Hit it with a hammer" advice - and I'm always in favor of using the hammer - so a whack with the 3lbs sledge and the U-joint popped and the whole assembly fell out of the vice.

COOL!

I didn't re-try the ball-joint "C" press.. but I'm pretty sure some pressure and a hit from the hammer would've done it there, too.

stand the whole damn thing in a bucket of coke overnight

it will damn near fall apart on ya in the morning

all the fucking salt they spread on our roads around here theres no such thing as a fresh U-joint

$5 bucks worth of coke in a 5 gallon restuaraunt bucket works for me.

Hey Tom, I broke my vice in half doing a driveshaft u-joint that way. I like the hammer in a vice method best. I can do a set in like 7 minuts flat.

Corse my new 20 ton shop press will be what i use from now on though:D

Well, I did keep my distance.. waiting for something to explode on me. :D

I'll be ordering a 20T press soon, too.

Started ordering parts for my truck motor though. :D

And the JD2 is mounted..
