I'm having the damnedest time with this D-60 rear of mine. After a couple of months of chasing down brake parts and axle seals etc. (FoMoCo tag had me fooled into thinking I had a Ford axle!!) I find I can't get a simple u-bolt for the thing.
To the best of my ability the axle tube measures 3" wide, but when I try to put a 3" u-bolt on it spreads the ends about a 1/4" at the halfway point. It seems to me That I need a 3 1/8" U-bolt, but I can't find such an animal. Should I buy another top plate and use a 3 1/4"? -- Seems like that would be too big.
Axle info:
9 17 4 B6 603494 1
According to prior searches here this axle is from a '74 model 1000 or 1100.
edit: I'm currently set up with perches on the top of the axle tube only, so I need the rounded bottom bolt, not the square type.
Thanks,
Dave

Just go to a GOOD bolt shop and have them fab up what you need. It shouldn't be a big deal.

Or you could try a spring shop. They have the equipment to make u-bolts.

Fuckin a,go back to the newb forum.
If your really cheap, drill out the holes in your top plate a little bigger or make new top plates or have bolts made.use your head:rolleyes:

Here's the problem: I've spent the better part of the last two months just getting brake parts for this damn thing, and my head is rapidly running out of energy to tackle anything.
So here's the whole boring, pathetic story:
Last summer I search all over for an axle that has simillar dimentions to my stock Spicer 53 rear. (66" WMS to WMS) with a 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. I find nothing even close untill I find a "Ford" Dana 60 in a stack of used axles.
Axle sits untill last Dec. when I am ready to fool with it and much to my surprise nothing seems to fit. After searching via the bill of materials number I learn that the FoMoCo tag doesn't mean the axle is from a Ford product.
I continue on buying and returning parts for internationals untill I've got everything. I measure the tube in the one spot where It's 3" wide and waste even more time buying and returning crap.
---------------
Flame deserved; But... I didn't post to the newb forum specifically because I erroneously thought a D-60 was a D-60 I really don't need any confusion caused by input on Dodge or Ford D-60s.
Now, what I was hoping to learn from the binder-minded is this: Is there anything else I should be wary of with this axle? Just about everything has burned me so far.
I have a few elementary IH questions too:
1: Date code indicates 1974 build and BOM indicates model 1000 or 1100. According to my searches models 1000 and 1100 were 1969-'71 and then became 1010, 1020 etc. for '72 and '73 only to become model 100 and 150 in '74 and '75. Which is the correct donor; model 100 or 1000?
2: Whilst chasing down parts at Autozone, a 1974 IH 100 pickup lists 18 different axles. The computer lists, "RA-19, RA-92, RA-43....." Are these IH codes or Autozone nonsense?
3: I've also read that IH bought whatever might be offered as overstock by Dana or other suppliers and hence it is not uncommon for an axle originally ordered by Ford would end up in a production International. It seems odd to me that the Ford tag would be stock on any International. Is this too stupid to be a posibilty, or do I have a later re-gear from a Ford donor?
Sorry to bring on the dumb, but After a weekend of being handed u-joint straps and later being told that, "The dealer will be your best bet." I'm just exhausted.

Ok to help out on your original question, being the tube thickness, IIRC it is 3 1/8. Make your plates using these dimensions, i.e........ tube thickness x spring width.
Then order your ubolts with your specific dimensions, the width of your tubes and the length you want them. Remember to add a little bit of thread.
The company I order my ubolts through is these guys customsuspension.com (http://customsuspension.com/)
It will take some squeezing to get the ubolts into the plates but it can be done.

What part are you having trouble with? Why are you trying to keep Autostone in business BTW? Find a Napa or someplace that uses books.
I cant understand what is so difficult about this?
As far asthe axle goes, its the same as every other 60 out there. Only a little better than a 44. Try the Binderbulletin.

If you have a 5x5.5 semi float axle D60, then what you have is a 60-2. The axle should use all Scout II rear drum parts. OK there is your charity for tonight.
