Looks like I have a new job – need to buy a gun to celebrate
That will teach them to block me from PBB at work :flipoff2:
I have accepted a project manager position at the water company. This company is privately owned and includes water systems across WV, PA, VA, KY, and other places.
I handed in my resignation letter this morning.
I start in 2 weeks.
The pay increase is significant, and the benefits are better. They give 5.25% of your gross pay to you 401k, plus they will match 100% up to 3% and then 50% for the next 2% (that is 9.25% of my gross pay just for contributing 5% of my income to the 401k)
I will continue to defer 15% of my gross into the 401 because I am not disciplined enough to get the money in hand and max out an IRA like I should.
Med, dental, eye insurance is better and it is 20 miles closer to my house, which will save about $30 a week in fuel and cut my maintenance by half (I now drive 39 miles each way).
The only downside is that I have to employed there for 31 days and then my benefits will start on the first of the next calendar month. So I will have to pay my med insurance through work out of pocket until May 1.
SO NOW I MUST BUY A NEW GUN TO CELEBRATE
It had been customary for me to buy something with my first paycheck from each new job for the amount of the check. Last time I bought a 14’ aluminum fishing boat.
This time I am looking at buying a gun.
I am really leaning toward a Marlin Cowboy 45-70 lever gun. My Dad has one, and I enjoy shooting it and hunting with it.
However, I have also been considering buying a new pistol.
I have been planning to buy a 22 auto pistol in the future. I will get lots of use out of one since I carry one quite a bit for hunting, plinking, and to shoot critters when I am out running my rabbit dogs (main concern is another dog jumping on them).
I have also been eyeballing a wheel gun for hunting, probably a 41 or 44. I really like the super blackhawks.
Then again, I have always wanted a really nice 1911 style 45 ACP.
So what are your recommendations and why?
The way I am, I will probably wait for a while until a deal falls in my lap. I am not the guy that picks out a gun and goes and pays market price for it. There are too many good slightly used ones out there, but I know what I want when I hear about it.

I think you should buy one of the rifles from this site. :D
Preferably a 45-110.
And let me shoot it.
Just once.
Please.

That's a nice lil' raise all by itself.
 on the new job - you will be an important part of our nation's security, as well. Maybe you should opt for a 50 cal? :grinpimp:

A buddy of mine has a 45-70 with the short stainless barrel and that thing kicks like a pissed off mule  He shot a deer with it last hunting season and said he rolled it 4 or 5 times
It's hard to say which one you should get because the ones on your list all have a different purpose.. If you throw in a shotgun and a black powder you will have all the bases covered  My vote based on your past post and the fact how much time you spend in the field with your dogs would be the 22.. I have a couple of them that I take on the 4 wheeler or scouting new hunting ground that come in handy from time to time..
I have this one I use for that purpose.. I like it because with the pocket holster you don't even know you got it on.. It looks like a pager clip sticking out :D

The other one I have is a Taurus 94 or 96, 9 shot stainless revolver that is a accurate little piece..

Barrett just came out with a new .416cal rifle, that produces 3500fps at the barrel and has a dropoff over 300m of zero!
That is what you need. Outshoots the .50 cal by their words.

I know where there's an Imbel L1A1 with 5 20 rnd mags and a hard case for $550.

1911. Every gun owner should have at least one in their collection. Kimber or Springfield Armory. Money well spent.

Yes, I have been eyeballing some Kimbers, but then reality hits me.
I would take a pistol like that (or any I own) and abuse it. Shoot the crap out of it, throw it behind the truck seat, on the ATV rack, and at the end of 4 years probably feel guilty about beating up such a nice gun.
I have shot Kimber rifles and handled the pistols. I feel they are higher quality than the Springfield Armory by handling the SA pistols.
The 22 pistol will probably be a browing buckmark or ruger Mark II, maybe Mark III but I doubt it. I will get one of those eventually. I have an H&R revolver now, but it is not as accurate as I feel it should be.
If I go with a 1911 type gun, it would be tough to go with a combat commander size or fullsize. I have other guns to carry, so I don't need one I can carry all the time. I have carried a full size 1911 before and found the length a bit much to be comfortable with at times.
I shoot 45-70's regularly. One is an H&R Buffalo Classic, and the other is the Marlin Cowboy lever. They are a lot of fun and have an enourmous range of loading possibilities. From black powder and 500 gr lead bullet to a much smaller jacketed bullet (I want to say 310 gr) that you can crank up for deer hunting. Yes, the hunting loads kick hard.
One gun that I want is a SxS Browing Auto (yes it is called and auto) in 20 ga for bird and rabbit hunting, but I have a nice shotgun now and really don't want one bad enough to lay the money down.

This summer I picked up a Ruger MKIII target hunter. at $400 it is a little pricy, but well worth it for the quality. I like having a .22 pistol for shooting squirles, rabbits and targets. With a .22 it is cheap to shoot and I find myself shooting it a lot more than my .40. The only thing I really don't like is the loaded chamber indicator, but I could care less weather it is there or not.
The sights are very good and the pistol fits in my hand better than anything else I looked at. I shoot mine quite a bit mostly because it is cheap to shoot.
I do like my fathers colt woodsman match target better, but you will most likely not be able to find one of those.
Shop around and look at all the target .22 pistols you can find.
As for you 1911 guys grip safetys suck and 1911s are generally overpriced. If you want a .45 handgun, look at a CZ-97

I agree with the 1911.
I do have a problem with Springfield. My one and only Springfield was a NIB Commander I just got a couple months ago and it needed a bit of feed ramp work before it would feed factory hardball reliably.:mad3:

congrats MAtt!
Congrats.
I have a Ruger Mark 1 bull barrel that shoots great after 20,000 rounds and not enough cleaning. A Super Blackhawk gets my vote too. I wish mine was stainless and had the factory scope rings.

Tough choice.
I shot a Kimber 1911 Custom II the other day and loved it. All around great gun. Price isn't really as bad as I thought it would be. Flawless.
As for the .22 auto, you might want to look at a Walther P22. I shot one the other day and it was alot of fun. Occasional jams with cheaper ammo, nothing uncommon for a .22 auto. Not match grade accurate or anything, but a great plinker. Suppressors are also pretty easy to find for them.
But the 45/70. Wow. The Marlin Guide Gun is a great one. You'll never have to track a deer again. It'll be processed and packaged right where you shot it. Kidding, but what a great gun. Marlin makes another model that has a 26" barrel and a 9 round capacity. Sharps are also fun, but pricey. I think it's Hornady that started producing new 45/70 ammo. Called the leverlution or something. Instead of the old flat nosed round, they're using pointed rounds more like a bolt action. The nose of the round is rubber so you don't have any full tube magazine accidental discharges. Probably expensive, but it appears to be a hell of a hunting round.
I wouldn't know what to pick either. :grinpimp:

That is wierd. I have had the same gun for 7 years and it feeds whatever I shove into it. The only 1911 that I have ever had an issue with was a Kimber that I bought on a whim, and it was a total pile of crap. After 2 trips back to the factory, I sold it, bought the Springfield and cut my losses.
I have shot other Kimbers that were good guns, I guess I just got a bad one.
The only auto's that I have ever owned that would reliably shoot any ammo I gave them reguardless of how dirty the gun was are Glocks. I know---- I hate the plastic too, but I gotta give the Devil his due.

hmm..22 rimfire?
S&W 622 stainless bolt, red dot and adjustable sights, two 12 rd mags, loading tools, all in factory box with less than 200 rds thru her..
