TOAdisco311 02-27-2006, 10:51 PM Please don't kill me on our roads.
crawler885 02-27-2006, 11:52 PM well tell me where yur at in nc and ill be sure to stay away!!!....cum on...is it that bad an idea..?? i mean it is much better for weight distribution....and throw some bags under it ......well anyway!
TOAdisco311 02-27-2006, 11:59 PM It would tow better, but would in no way increase the towing capacity of the truck. Airbags wont do shit for stopping all this weight either. What are you planning on towing anyways that demands a 5th wheel for a tacoma?
RodeoRob 02-28-2006, 05:32 AM ...what i want to know is would a fifth wheel hitch allow for more towing capacity....
No, its going to do quite the opposite... if you're staying within the manufacter's numbers, you'll be towing a lot less due to the increase hitch weight on the fifth wheel.
Not to mention this is just all around a bad idea.... for so many reasons.
if you're wanting to tow the most you can in the safest fashion... stick to bumper pull and get a nice weight distributing hitch setup.

Haole 02-28-2006, 05:55 AM It would be much cheaper and faster to just play in traffic. You end up with almost the same results, only with less people being killed.

demonranger 02-28-2006, 06:32 AM your towing capacity isn't going to change enough to justify the expense you might get a couple hundred pounds of extra capacity but that'll be eaten by the trailer & the extra framework to make the connection in the bed.
If you want to look at numbers take the truck full of fuel & all the normal crap you're going to have in it when you are planning on towing. Go down to the local truck stop, quarry, trash dump, trucking terminal...etc. and weigh the truck weigh the front axle, rear axle and the whole truck. Then inspect the certification sticker in the driver's door jam. Figure out how much GVW you have left to handle pin weight (GVWR (5350) minus whole truck weight from scale) Then look at your rear axle rating figure out how much you have available there. Look at those figures realize that a GN or 5ver will put 15-20% of the total weight on the tow rig compared to the 10% of a tag trailer.
gross vehicle weight rating (lbs) 5,450, curb weight (lbs) 3,865, gross trailer weight braked (lbs) 3,501 and max payload (lbs) 1,349
you've got 1585 lbs between curb weight (http://www.automotive.com/2005/101/toyota/tacoma/prerunner-crew-cab-pickup/1178/specifications/index.html) and GVWR to cover you, fuel, passengers, gear, hitch and pin weight. Sit down and do some math for what you're planning on towing and get some weights on the trailers you're looking at as well.

   LMAO I've never seen one of those little fawkers before.
All I'm going to say it that the Taco has just about the same frame as the 80's Yota. I mean, even the same rear hitch fits both model trucks. And there is a reason big companies like B&W Hitch don't build gooseneck hitches for the Taco. They do build them for the Tundra, but it has a much different frame structure. And yes, I have seen truck buckle right in the middle from the frames failing, actually it was an 05 Dodge 3500 with a camper on it.

KacksterK5 02-28-2006, 09:34 AM Have fun with your 10 ft single axle gooseneck that carries your lawnmower.

I don't have a pic. It took place in Reno. It was one of the bigger campers with a pop-out. The frame buckled right between the bed and the cab. The cab-over portion of the camper smashed the cab of the truck when it buckled. I didn't watch it happen, just saw it once it was done. I didn't see any damage on the front or rear bumpers, so I don't think there was an accident of any sort, but I can't rule it out either. I can tell you that the truck was a mess, and the camper didn't look to bad. It was a single tire, not a dually, and had a Hemi motor. IMHO, the camper probably far exceeded the capacity of the truck, which is most cases, but frames don't buckle in most cases. I also didn't look under the truck at the frame, so I don't know if the customer had welded something there or done anything to weaken the frame. Like I said, just something I saw. But I do work on a lot of different trucks, and the Dodge might have a tube frame, but that thing is the thinnest thing I've ever seen. It doesn't appear to be any thicker than a Wrangler, Yota, etc. frame. IMHO, the Chevy and the Ford have the stronger frames, but hey, all I do is work on them for a living.

What years? my 96 half ton, I wanna say the frame is 3/16" thick or so... man... now I gotta go measure.
What I don't like on Dodge frames - at least on mine... they aren't one piece. They are two... I want to say riveted together. Maybe that's where the frame let loose on the 3500.
HBbadb0y 02-28-2006, 06:29 PM doesn't the new tacoma's come with a plastic bed?

So do the newer body style Chevy duallies, why does that matter?

only on the outside. its layered with steel on the inside. does it matter or not? i dunno. i asked a question, still haven't got an answer yet.

normally I will defend the guys who push limits when it comes to towing but not in your case.:flipoff2:

The first time I saw one of those, it was being pulled by an Isuzu Amigo. Guy had removed the back seat and put a gooseneck style hitch in place of it. He had to run with the soft top off.
jetboy 03-12-2006, 08:49 AM I have always thought about building a custom trailer to haul a large overhead camper as a 5th wheel behind my toyota pickup. build it light, but with 35-38" tires. Total weight under 2500lbs. good little offroad camper. I have a landcruiser now, but I always thought it would be kinda cool.

It's the tube frames from 03-new that I'm refering too. Not really impressive IMHO.

I'm not really sure about that one myself. You would probably have to go look at one or talk to a dealer to find out.
