Ahh very good guess, but does a d27 use a u joint bigger than a d44 open knuckle?I am obviously bored its not that uncommon of a part, I was just tripping on the u joint size.

ford standard cut d-60... this setup uses a 30 spline shaft with slightly larger joint than a d-44 with outer snaprings. the spindles from this 60 are identical to a d-44 ford with the large 5 bolt pattern. it is open knuckle but uses trunion style knuckles.. not sure of the year but I have seen 2 of them. I am building steering for one right now for a guy doing a swap into a mid 90's chev 3500 strait axel conversion.... basically it is a boat anchor for wheeling use............... How did I do?:flipoff2:

The ever so rare POS 60 that'll trick people... rumor has it they started in 76 & ran untill the true model change in mid-77 when the front 60 went RC. I've never actually seen one myself, but have heard enough about them over on www.ford-trucks.com to belive they do exist.

I've seen one under a Ford. At the time I didn't know all the aforementioned bad stuff about this axle. I just remeber thinking, "man that sucks, a low pinion driver's side drop Dana 60."

The Big Hub Closed knuckle D-44 (aka #3500 axle) from 1973-1975 used the same axle assembly as the '74-'75 Closed knuckle low-pinion D-60 that Ford used. '76-'77 D-60's are open knuckle with discs but are STILL Low-pinion.

So this could be from the D-44 also.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!!!!! So how did you do it man? It is a 74 F250 straight cut d44 closed knuckle with drum brakes. The only weird thing is it uses a 6bolt spindle like a chevy and is acctually the same spindle as a 77-newer chevy with the thicker second bearing location. A buddy gave the complete front axle to me for free so I needed the 4 series carrier out of it and the 4.10s were bad. I am using it to roll the YJ project around on the bent frame while I set up the new frame. I was very shocked to see it had 30 spline axles and 19 spline stubs. I figured it to be a 60s ford d44 but the ring gear is stamped '74. Thanks for the fun guys.

Will those axles and u-joints fit into your newer 44? (with resplining to the correct length of course)

BTW, looks like you are MOOving along on the black and white(cowcolored) jeep:D Gonna have to think of a new CB handle/nickname for you holstein jeep there:p
