: axle cleanin

im taking apart and rebuilding my whole axle, whats a good way to clean the housing? should i get it dipped or should i just hit it with a wire wheel or something else maybe?? thanks much

You could always sand blast it with a media blaster if you have one or have access to one. Just make sure to cover certain areas so that you plan on reusing like spindles and such. You could dip it but that sounds pretty costly to me. I see no real reason why not to just hit it with a wire wheel. Whatever works pretty much.

Just hit it w/ a wire wheel... Get the balls as clean as you can and don't hit them w/ the wheel! Take a little fine emory cloth to em' if it needs it. Wire wheel only the Housing... nothing else! The knuckles could get thrown in the parts washer if desired, take your time and paint it all up real pretty and reassemble right!:)

I completely disassemble mine and pressure wash them close up. Then I dry them with my air compressor to avoid rust and set them in the sun for an hour. Paint and then reassemble :)

sounds like a plan..but i just got back from sears and there are 2 differant kinds...knotted and then just a plan wire wheel..which is better?

I use just the plain wire wheel. Make sure you wear long sleeves and glasses though.

Use a wire wheel and some break cleaner.
If that dont work get some new Alloy shafts.:)
