You have 4393 posts and your asking A question that has been asked A thousand times. Youd think after that many posts you could use the search button.

Do you drive on the street at all?
It should be liveable. Your tires will always chirp around corners.

I have a spool in my Bronco and I love it . No drawbacks jus' traction ! It is a full spool and so what if it chirps the tires . I can

So go drive around the block and answer your own question.
But first calm down before you drive or you will not get the true expierance your looking for.

I like my spool way better than the detroits I've driven. Too bad I couldn't get the gears to hold up in my toy axle. Building a spooled 9" as we speak.

I dont have a spool in my rig, its still open. Yea, i know..
BUT i have driven a spooled rig, F/R on the street and off road. It was nice, ride wise. No herky jerky of a locker clicking off and on. I took a few minutes to get used to, but i liked it. Off road, you have full time traction. No worries of locker lag or breakage.
Being that im used to open axles, i can say that a spool is no big deal. Alot of chirping, but who cares. But damn will you hook up when you gun it :D:D

so why in the hell would you replace a perfectly good detroit for a spool? unless you were hard up for some cash?

me thinks the newbie doesn't know the saga of ba's detroit/gear problems. Mine's welded and I love it, way better than when it was locked.

After you guys get done pounding beers and fingering one another (grin), I'd be interested in some firsthand thoughts in the Detroit vs. Spool saga. Not so much interested in the street manners as I am trail performance.

We all know spools offer 100% traction. But on tight rockcrawling trails, the word I'm hearing is the spool pushes the rig around far too much to be useful. Several guys I know have pulled them in favor of Detroits.

Again, would like to hear firsthand offroad experience, particularly rockcrawling experience. A rear spool would save me a couple hundred bucks on the 60s I'm building over the Detroit I had planned to buy. The wife would really like that!

Do you honestly think that at 2mph when turning that the detroit is gonna unlock???????????? Dont think so. It is basically a spool on the trail. Spool it and forget it (coming from experience with a spool in a DD)

I don't honestly have a legitimate thought about it at all, that's why I asked the fawkin' question (grin). I've been told by two people I wheel with and trust that they've seen a radical difference between a spooled rear and a Detroit rear in a SWB rig in a rockcrawling environment. Just curious about others' experiences.

Spools *do* rule... especially when they can be turned off for street use.

Think I'll keep my ARB's. :flipoff2:

Considering that when turnign on the trail, you'll be applying the throttle, so the detroit will be locked, no different than a spool. The same idea applies to street use. A detroit is only slightly easier on tires than a spool, unless you are super conscious and coast around every corner, waiting for it to pop. Now it would suck to ahve one in the front while trying to make a tight turn on a trail, but I can turn mine off for that:flipoff2:
I bought a strange spool for my 9" figured it might be stronger than the summitt spool, and I've been burning up toy spools and gear sets (bending the ring gear flange).

A correctly welded rear will save you even more, see if the wifey likes that.:roxy:

OK you spool phreaks.....

What about cutting breaks? Anybody have success with full spools and cutting brakes? I'm talking ability to brake any single wheel, disco that axle with twinstick, then throttle and pivot on braked wheel. Not sure how it will work with a spool?

camo - you spooled up front too? Hubs or flanges? I should really pay more attention!

I got a red neck spool..........it's called a lincoln locker it cost all of $.50, at the most, for the welding rods. It's ok on the street with larger tires but put small 31's and it grabs real bad. But I dout ya be puttin on anything smaller than the 39's
