What's the best way to remove surface rust on my American Racing chrome wheels?? There is not a lot of it... and it's strictly surface... However, I don't want any!!

Kerosene and steel wool.

This is definitely an un-bright question.. duh.. but is kerosene that stuff you buy at the gas station from the pump labled "Diesel Fuel"??? I've also heard of Diesel Fuel #1 and Diesel Fuel #2... Which one (if either) is condidered "Kerosene"???

Please pardon my dim-witted questions, but I don't ever buy kerosene...

Hi Caltow;

As hard as it is to believe, I'm in the process of restoring this particular Sammi to as near original condition as possible (without spending a fortune)... When I am finished, I want it to be somewhat of a "Show Truck" which is still highly serviceable... I don't mind having people stop me to say "Wow!.. Really nice-looking Zuk!! Who's restoring it??" and then explaining to them that I'm doing the work myself!!

If I simply wanted to "sandblast and powder-coat the chrome wheels...." as you suggested, I would have done that. As you mentioned, "chrome is for show-trucks!"... and I agree. Even though it's not what I'm looking for,I respect your opinions on this... Next time, I would hope that you would respect my questions since I'm asking them for a particular reason...

Yo Caltow;

Since I offended you, I do apologize... sincerely...

Hey Guys, I noticed something... It seems that nearly all of you live on the West Coast... Here in the Tri-State area (Southeastern Pa, NJ and Delaware), 1986-1988 Zuks in excellent condition are a fairly rare bird... (I think it has something to do with wet, snowy winters, salt, rust and more salt!) People are ALWAYS asking me about my restored trusty little machine... Other 1986-88 owners of restored Zuks say the same thing about their rides... (I just met a guy with a 1987 that had a phenomenal two tone purple/pink paint job...)

Occasionally, I'll see a modified early Zuk on the highways and byways and I've been to a few off-road events in New Jersey and the so-called "mountains" of PA... much smaller hills and lesser events than you folks are accustomed to... the thing I like most is when modified Zuk owners note the "original stock" condition of mine (which is interesting since the engine, diffs, etc. are all painted bright, non-original colors)... and then promptly offer to give me various original parts left over from their modifications...

Last Thursday, I was at a beach in South Jersey with my 11 year-old daughter when a woman walked up to me with her nine-year old daughter and started this animated conversation about my "original" 88 Zuk... Turns out that she'd bought one new 13 years ago... and just recently traded it in on a new Grand Vitara.. Now she's gonna give me her "original" tool kit that she saved... (I was about to buy one from a guy in Nevada... not any more!!)

Unfortunately, restoring this little gem is not as cheap as it could be since I have to buy many OEM parts from a dealer (DeSimone Suzuki in Philadelphia)... (Of course, there is no monthly payment and the insurance is cheap since it's registered as a "vacation/pleasure vehicle)... It's kinda neat when several of the mechanics come outside to ask me questions about my restoration job and to offer advice... Most of the old Zuks they see have a significant rust problem...

Hm-m-m... you guys on the West Coast don't realize how fortunate you are to have 13 and 14 year old Zuks in such abundant supply... On second thought, you probably do know... that's why you live there...

Take care... and keep 'em runnin'...

Yo Poppy;
This past summer, I met a guy with a good-looking "restored" (and definitely not modified) 1986 Zuk who was gonna talk to his body-shop owner uncle about some type of "reflective mirror finish" for his entire rig. You're right, I'd definitely stop you to ask who chromed your truck!!! Come to think of it, that's an interesting concept... Hm-m-m-m... I wonder if...

I could see buying a 1930 Ford, rodding it, and making some good coin. But dump that much money into a Samurai is plain sick. I think someone needs to give your head a shake. Do you think your truck will increase its net worth on 10 years? I have a buddy who put 12k into a hot rod and just sold it for 50k. What will yours be worth?

Yo Mud-lite;

You are quite right... I am sick... but I'm havin' FUN!!! Does your world revolve around makin' money from every little thing you do?? C'mon... I restore it because I ENJOY IT. It feels good!!

A few years ago, my best friend decided to restore two cars he owned... One was a 1968 Corvette... the other was a 1985 Mitsubishi (the first car he bought brand-new)... and he asked me to help him (his wife refused.. tee-hee)

Working on the Vette was one thing... working on the Mitsubishi was... embarrassing!! But as we worked on both rides, I realized how much he enjoyed tracking down those hard to find OEM parts for his little Mitsu... it was pure, corny, zany fun! (Finding parts for the Vette did not involve much more than a phone call since they are in such great demand).

Today, Bob's restored Vette sits in his garage... restored but too expensive to drive. His wife drives a Camry (I don't like those at all)... and he drives the family Grand Caravan daily... However, on many weekends, he slips behind the wheel of his dinky, little 5-speed Mitsubishi, guns the toy engine and zoo-o-o-oooms through the backroads of Maryland.

Pure, unadulterated fun... wheee-e-e.... Hobbies are like that... we do 'em because they make us feel good... not because there's a pot o' gold somewhere down the line....

Take care... and keep 'em runnin...
