Ok, this is gunna be hard tp explane....
22Re-W56
MerlinCrawler (both stock gears)
(front case)89'EFI (back case)88-89EFI

Ok, this just started doing this after I put all this stuff in...

I'm driving down the freeway 60-65mph in 5th gear, cruzen along just fine. I let off the gas to coast(slow up a bit) and a "Wizzzing, rattle" LOUD for a second a two, then it goes away. All the while foots off the gas.
Then when I slightly step on the gas again "Wizzing Rattle" again. But once it feels like the system hooks up fully it goes away... It does it in all the gears the same way. It also goes away if I put in the clutch???? Seams like it only dose it when there's little or no load on the drivetrain. At complete stops, it dosen't do it????.

I just put in the crawler, and have new 5:29's and the 37's. Just put it all on in the last few weeks, this is the first time I got to get it out...

I'm running GL-5 in both cases, and the tranny fluid looked good so I didn't change it....

The sound seems to be coming from the t-case/s, tranny area...not the rear axle....
Not sure what the hell it is, or where to start to trouble shoot????

Any help would be great..
Thanks

My rig made a similar noise, turned out to be the rear driveshaft. Check the U-joints and the slip-spline for any play. That may not be what's causing yours, but at least it's a cheap fix, and if I had to choose between a faulty driveshaft and a faulty Tcase(s), I'd choose the driveshaft every time.

I shorten'd the rear myself, it was retubed afew months ago for my SAS, can't figure that it would be it, but I will defenetly start there...thanks!

When you figure it out, post it up. I just pray that mine is fine when I go to drive it :D Gods knows damn near everything else has went to hell with my project here lately

its your rear drive line, both of my trucks that have crawlers did the same thing, just as you said. you can fix it buy putting a CV jiont next to the t-case and then checking the side to side wobble that is in the slip yoke.

cool my runner has that same issue

i thought it was my tranny :D which would be the only thing not replaced yet. i just got my new rear shaft from jess

im putting in my crawler and new shaft at the same time

i hope that takes care of my noise problem.:smokin:

i am getting play at the ujoint @ transfer i was hoping that was it.

I am not running a crawler, but I got the same noise.
Balancing the rear shaft and replacing the u-joints helped, but didn't cure it. It did give me the incentive to add a hoop around the shaft.
I really noticed mine when I had the interior out, as yours may be. Without the passenger seat, center console, carpet, etc.
We''ll compare noise this weekend.

How did you seal the boot area of the second shifter you added?

I can tell you this - all too often what you think is a "new noise" is really an "old noise" that a "new" hole in the cab lets you hear.

If you recall - the stock shifter has like 3 layers of boots for a reason ;)

Also, I have found that those super-slick engine addatives - while generally not the best for engines themselves - can do well to reduce tranny temps and noises...

Good luck :)

I'll give you a call later and figure out the plan!
We'll have to trailer it, Today is the last on my temp tag :(
I need to pry myself off the computer and go make the front shaft.... It's really loud tho, may not be if i covered up that "3 shifter" hole that's between the seats :D Right now I'm going for function, not looks!

What do you run in you'r cases as far a liquid??? I'm going to go work on it in a few... I'll get something thick to cover the holes and see what happens! My old Boots are toast as of right now.

Thanks All!

I know this thing has been dead for awhile, but I am facing the same problem, I think. My description is as follows:

go 60 + MPH then let off gas or push in clutch. Basically don't accelerate or decelerate just coast. at this point I get the scary vibration/bad bearing type of noise.

What I did next:

Took out rear driveshaft and drove it with the front hubs locked in 4hi. No noise.

then:

Came home, put in spare driveshaft. Drove hubs unlocked again in 2wd. Noise is back.

Could this be due to a bad driveline angle? Seems unlikely that both driveshafts have problems. Did anyone ever figure this one out for certain? Earlier posts- some say driveline, some say tried driveline helped but not fixed.
