: best springs for YJ SOA?
slamigo 03-03-2006, 07:07 AM Hey all,
(first off, the search hasn't been working lately, so I apologize for not searching)
I have an 89 YJ SOA with 4" lift springs. I've decided to replace the lift springs with either Rubicon Express SOA springs or Old Man Emu springs. I'd like to get springs with a small amount of lift, maybe 1.5''-2''. But mostly, I want to get springs that are softer and flexier.
I want to have a better onroad ride and more flex offroad. The 4" lift springs I have now are way too stiff.
Is there another brand I should be looking at? I've done some research and I'm leaning towards the OME ones.
Rattlecan 03-03-2006, 07:30 AM SOA with 4" springs... Holy $4!! that has to be a tall rig
I am sprung over with well broke in stock springs. Flex is awesome... Ride isn't too bad on the road. I can clear 35s easy, 36 - 37 with trimming and maybe a 1"bl. I like my junk low because of side hilling where I wheel...
I think RE sells a mil wrap 1.5" spring...
jesster 03-03-2006, 08:29 AM I have heard lots of good things about the RE1.5's on the boards here, but have yet to try them or see them in action. OME are a 2.5 lift and plus ~5.5 lift of SOA and that will have you up in the air. Also, I question how long that the OME would last on a SOA. I ran some OME on a SUA 4 cylinder YJ. They were super soft, but it didn't even take a year before they were starting to sag.
I am running reasonably flat springs (repacked rear YJ's in the front, and repacked front Waggy's in the rear on a SOA YJ. I am guessing that I have ~8 inches of lift right now and that's really a couple of inches higher than I would like to be with 36's and 98 inch wheelbase. I think I may try inverting main leaves on my next set of springs to lower it down a bit and just cut off some more sheet metal to clear.
domb65yj 03-03-2006, 08:43 AM Im running re 1.5" springs on mine, they ride great off and on road

The previous owner had, (in addition to SOA with 4'' lift springs), 1.5'' lift shackles as well as a 3'' body lift on this thing. I have removed the body lift and swapped out the shackles, but these 4'' lift springs are making this rig too tall.
Are the OME springs THAT soft? I will be putting a heavy duty bumper/tire carrier on there this spring and hopefully a winch on the front this fall. I don't want the rig to start sagging.

At the time my Jeep had the stock 2.5, ax-5, d30, d35 on 33 radials, no winch or bumper so it was very light. The OME's rode great, and to be fair I didn't have bumpstops, which probably helped to kill them.
I think you can order OME springs for Jeeps w/ heavier stuff like winches, bumpers, v8's. I just question the need to be that high with a stock wheelbase...
What size tires/axles are you planning on running?
slamigo 03-03-2006, 10:25 AM I'm going to stick to the 35-36'' range for tires. My shackles are heavy duty and give about 0.5'' of lift. So with just SOA and my shackles, I have 6'' of lift. That's plenty for 35-36'' tires right there.
I am thinking that either 2'' OME or 1.5'' RE springs are good candidates. I don't really want to go down to stock. I'm a little concerned that if I remove 4 inches out of my lift it will affect my pinion angle, castor etc.
I'm really leaning towards the RE 1444 and RE 1445 springs.
Plato2k5 03-04-2006, 11:06 PM i just had 2 of my 4 orderd RE 1.5 5pack SOA springs brought by fedex this morning and man they look shweeeeeet!!
IMO the RE's will be too tall for a 35-36" tire. I have them on mine w/ 37's and I feel that it is too tall. Other than tha, O love the springs and they both ride and flex great. You may want to look in to these; http://full-traction.com/detail.php?MODELID=2&MAKEID=1&TYPEID=2&PRODUCTID=115&NOTES=

Brokagain 03-05-2006, 07:07 AM My first choice would be springs made by Alcan Spring.
Second would be RE made for springover.
The cheap rout I took is stock springs with an added full length leaf at each spring pack.
biggreentj 03-05-2006, 07:55 AM i have BDS 2" SOA springs with 36" TSLs, now i have flat fenders up front and comp cut rear, and with this setup i believe i could easily clear 38s, but with no trimming the 36s fit perfect in the rear. they ride great, i love em

Do you have pics of your rig with this setup? I have the 2 inch BDS springs in my garage, going on my rig in a couple weeks.
I'll be running 37s and already have a 1 inch body.
bloomj5 03-05-2006, 02:39 PM I am kind of in the same boat as sicko I am going springover w RE 1.5 inch wrangler springs on my CJ-7 and I wanna see Pics with 37's if anybody has them thanks.
rockr 03-05-2006, 04:36 PM i'm runnin the RE"s with 38's........NOT TOO TALL:flipoff2:
i ran them with 35's, 37's and now 38's.........good springs. i have beat my rig and only broke one main leaf on the springs....was bound-up..........axle and spring went BOOM:smokin:
slamigo 03-05-2006, 05:13 PM Here's the rig as it sits now. I had my co-pilot with me that day.

I'm pretty sure that quality springs won't affect your castor, only shackles. Pinion angle, on the other hand, will totally mess with your pinion angle.

Does anyone have experience with these? I'm going SOA in a couple weeks and am planing on running 35's until I can get more wheelbase, then I'll step up to 37's. For springs I was going back and forth between the Full Traction 0" lift springs and the RE 1.5" SOA springs, but I think an extra 1.5" added to an SOA is too much for 35's. Has anyone run the Full Tractions? How do they ride? Last? Quality?
