: Thinking of buying an older F-250

I went and looked at a 1977 F-250 I saw in the paper, here is what I gleaned from talking to the owner and driving it around some.

It has a 351-M which he rebuilt, it has the Ford granny low 4spd, and I'm not sure about the transfer case, or the axles. It is currently sitting on a set of 36" Super Swampers with around 65% tread. The body is a little beat, and the interior is trashed, but it started right up without even pumping the gas. Driving it down the road, the ride started to get a little interesting, it didn't wander too much around the road, and it did not pop out of any gears, the clutch felt fine, but the brakes left much to be desired, they had very little stopping power, and the pedal and brakes themselves would stick, and to get them to disengage, I had to pull up on the brake pedal. The only other problem the owner told me about, was a problem with the drag-link, that required the addition of power steering fluid every other month. I only plan on using this truck to haul boats to the lake, do yardwork, and just generally beat around in, with some mild to moderate use off-road. My question is, is around $1000 or so a fair price to pay for this truck? Or would I be getting hosed.

that should have a 60 rear and 44 or 60 front right? probably an np205 tcase behind an sm465 tranny?

if im thinking correctly, those are all stout, good to have, parts. those are very good trucks.

the rear 60 isnt the strongest rear axle but it will hold up for what you plan to do with it.

Sounds like a bad ass truck, my '78 is the toughest truck I ever owned, bulletproof, and the one you are looking at sounds even better. Go for it.

It should have a NP435 for a tranny which is very similar to a SM 465.

Please don't ever say your truck is bulletproff:rolleyes:

Also, a rear 60 is pretty darn strong, especially for what this guy is doing.

sounds like a very reasonable deal. I'm sure it would more than meet your expectations for what you plan to do with it.

I'd buy it.

and part it out...if it has the HP60 up front your $1000 is already paid back :D

Not to sound like a complete moron, but how would I tell if it has the HP60 up front?

It would have a High Pinion...I believe all of the f250 series in the late 70's were ALL hi-pinion

HP = the pinion is above the center line of the ring gear would look like this (this is a HP dana 44 for reference the 60 would look like this only bigger :D )

sounds like a good deal. the brakes might be full of mud. try cleaning them out. might be air in the brakelines too.
