I asked about this before and was told that it would be a huge pain in the ass to make it work. They are not the same dimentions. It is not at all like swapping a YJ grill to a CJ or CJ grill to a YJ.

I heard in the past that the TJ hood and cowl had a different radius on it than the CJ/YJ tub, but it looks ok to me. Maybe it was re-arched to match?

if you change the hood AND grill, ditching the fenders, the only problem i would think might be a few brackets and such. but what do i know.

If they can put a V8 in a VW bug then anything is posable. It just how much time and work you want to put into it.

I think the grill is a bit shorter too, which might be an issue at the radiator. DC went for more of an aerodynamic look in 97 when they had to install airbags to meet the federal mandate for saftey.

The TJ hood is a little narrower than the YJ. The Jeep in the pic must have had a little "modification" to the hood to get a good fit.

If you want to use a TJ grille and Hood on a YJ retaining the YJ fenders you will have a lot of fabrication. The grille/fender intersection is much different on the TH and the hood is narrower also. Then you lose the radiator area. The grille is about 1.5" shorter on the YJ than the TJ.

and a YJ does, it has fawking square head lights, how can having a TJ hood and grill make it not feel like a jeep, if anything the inside would not make it feel like a jeep but you still have a TJ, just with a "real" jeep front clip.

A TJ is one bas ass platform for one bad ass wheeler.

I don't know, I like the way my TJ looks. Now when I am done with it, it is going to look more like a CJ when I cut the finders and put in the CJ blinkers.

Get over the FAWKING Square Headlight shit........a Jeep is a Jeep. Who gives a FAWK about what front end it has.

If you want to talk about YJ's not being REAL jeeps then tell me a few things:

1) Have you ever waved at a YJ while driving........? Don't tell me know because I know you have! :mad3:

2) Do YJ's have airbags and cushy interior.....I think not? So does that make the TJ less of a REAL JEEP :mad3:

3) Wranglers have had Leaf Springs for how long, not COILS?? So does that make the TJ less of a REAL JEEP :mad3:

I own a YJ.....but if a TJ would have came my way when I was shopping for a Jeep I would have gotten it. The simple fact is it's a Jeep........some choose old ones.....for the original look, and some choose TJ's for the luxury features and Coil Suspension vice Leaf's.

As I said before......a Jeep is a Jeep. And if you didn't wave at me because I have a YJ then you shouldn't own a Jeep.

Nough Said...........:flipoff2:

relax guys yj's are kewl too all i was saying is that if you where to do a clip change why waste time and money and alot of energy when you can make it look like a cj which we all can agree is the mack daddy of all our short wheelbase wranglers...except for mine its a RENEGADE hahahaahah!;)

Ok, reviving this old post. I am starting in this direction and will post pics and progress on the install. I got a decent deal on a TJ grill and hood, and since I am redoing my whole Jeep thought, what the heck?

Why go in this direction? Before flaming again about sqaure headlights and all crap, the TJ will give my engine more air circulation, since I am not installing TJ headlights, and the hood is slightly higher than the stock YJ.

I will post pics of progress and how much of a pain in the ass this will be. So far, I am fixing up the hood, so pics will follow :)

Wrong! The Original Ford prototypes (ok they were banthams, but they were still labeled as GP by the military) were 2wheel drive, had leaf sprung rear, and TTB (ok, 4x2 version of TTB, cant think of the name right now) with coils up front :flipoff2:

How can the original GP be un-Jeep?

Hi Shell,

Yep could not help it, I originally had my middle finger out, but my GF was not happy about it when taking the pic :) I am planning to do a dove-tail approach in the rear similar to yours. I am trying to figure out the roll cage setup and see how that will work. Your setup is coming out shweeet :)

Main reason I was doing this is since I was doing a paintjob on the Jeep I decided to change things up a bit and also gain some hood height for my upcoming engine lift for a flat belly. I may be doing tube fenders in the near future as well, so the TJ grill will give it a cool buggy look :D

Here are some instructions.

Parts:

-TJ hood and grill
-TJ hood hinges
-TJ hood tie-downs (plastic)
-TJ headlights, bezels, etc
-TJ grill to cowl rods (the YJ's are too short)
-Misc bolts and washers

1- Remove the YJ hood
2- To remove the grill, you will need to disconnect the headlights, AC radiator if you have one, and disconnect the radiator
3- Install and mock up the grill, making sure that it aligns close with the YJ fenders. It takes a bit of pressure to bring the TJ grill to position :)
4- For a good fit, you will need to redrill holes to the TJ grill, so it aligns well.
5- Mount the radiator in the stock positions. You may need to do some light realignment.
6- Optional: I installed a junkyard electric fan on the TJ grill, so I can keep the stock mechanic fan, and on the trail also enable the electric fan as needed. The TJ grill seems slightly taller than the YJ, plus if you find a small enough fan, you can install it right inside the grill.
7- Mock the TJ hood in place.
8- In order to use the TJ hinges, you will need to drill the YJ cowl since the TJ hood hinge position is offset. (see pics). You will also need to bend the stock TJ hinges so the angle in their back is reduced and they will sit flush in the cowl. I used a BFH (Big F...ing hammer), and a couple of good hits and it was flat and in perfect shape).
9-Now it is the time to do the actuall install, make sure to measure twice and do it once :) Use masking tape as reference markings. If you have body lifts, etc the TJ grill is taller, so you will need to compensate the difference in height somehow (i.e cut a bit of the BL off, etc.
10- Pay attention to your engine fan, make sure it turns freely and is not touching the fan shroud. Mine was slightly off and I had to do some minor adjusting (read cutting)
11- I am hoping to finish the install in a few days, so I will keep ya posted on any additional findisngs, but it is basically done, aside from a few more screws here and there, and some adjusting. Putting the TJ hood locks on will be the last step.

Findings:
-the TJ hood will obviously not fit perfectly 100% (slightly wider in the back since the TJ cowl is some milimiter wider). You can either leave as is, or re-arch the back of the hood with some minor tough love)
-all of the stock YJ electrical fittings will work for the TJ. You will need to make a decision here as far as turn markers. Since my Jeep is flatfendered, I will need to install some front turn markers. I am not sure yet what direction I am going on that, most likely use some CJ style markers on the TJ grill.

Good luck!
