: TeraFlex' Klune copycat?
cbassett 04-04-2002, 01:33 PM TeraFlex is supposedly coming out soon with a Klune-V-type reduction box. I read about it in one of this month's 4x rags. I can't remember the exact reduction, the unit dimensions are smaller than Klune (~4" instead of Klune's 6"), and no mention of $$$.
Anyone have the lowdown (no pun intended):D ?
The rumor that I heard was it is a doubling box. and its 7" long not 6??? So one of us got a bum scoop. :D
Cliffy [JD] 04-04-2002, 03:27 PM Hmmm, reduction box, doubling box....same thing in my book.

depends on if you are coming or going:flipoff2: I use a 2:1 steering quickener in my jeep turned backwords, so instead of 3.5 turns stop to stop I get 7:flipoff2: but in the rouny-round world they would be happier with 1.75 turns

Cliff, I meant that a reduction box would be more than just 2:1
And the length I heard was longer than a klune. Not shorter.
Supergper 04-04-2002, 05:30 PM It is just a reduction box aimed specifically at the SWB crowd at only 4" long...It is only a 1.75 low gear but gives you a overall with stock t-case of 4.76:1 which is half decent...I would guess somewhere in the same neighborhood as the teralow kit since you will acheive the same thing...hmmm to really polish that turd we could add a teralow and the reduction box and get a 7:1 ratio:D:D:D
Supergper 04-04-2002, 05:32 PM Oh yeah its on page 36 of the May issue of JP
Ok so with a sm465 and a tera doubler box and a tera low and 488's and 35's I could have a nice crawl. :D

Yeah! Perfect for all that killer Eastern crawling!! :flipoff2:
Paul
Tony Sobrito 04-04-2002, 07:11 PM the protos are 21 spline... 1.75 reduction retail around $850 due out in the fall. maybe someone else can get more/better info.
Paul... Are you pullin my leg again :trooper: :rasta: :jeep3: :jeep2:
we have lots of mud here in the east and the rocks are about 20 feet under the mud. :D
Advance Adapters is working on a reduction box also. The rockbox. Here is a pic of a prototype.

That's the one.
4" long.
1.75:1 reduction, dropping a 231 to 4.76:1. If the price Tony quoted is accurate, this unit offers the benefits of teralow and tera2wd for less than the price of TeraLow.
Sounds good to me.

i assume its a given there will be a 23 spline version? no one can use 21 cept xj/yj/tj guys that are running a 4 cyl and cheesy aluminum manual trannies...
i wish one of em would make a texas patterned box sos those of us with a 20 case could bolt it on without adapters :smokin:

sorry to get off topic, but does this backwards quickener make steering easier? id be all about that :) ya get it somewhere like summit? does it take anythig special to install it backwards?
jeepnmatt 04-05-2002, 06:52 AM it would be cool for us D20 guys if they made a texas pattern box to mate up to the tranny and a D300 pattern on the output. that way, we don't have to pay $500 for the adapter AND $850 for the box...just $850 for the box.
i must be thinking logically again...
i've been thinking of cutting up a D20 to use only the low-range. that way i would have a T-18, half a D20, then mate my D300 to the back. it would be alot of work though.

from summit...
The racer's first choice.
2 to 1 ratio Howe steering quickener
Howe introduced the first Steering Quickener in 1986 and it's been the first choice of racers ever since. With a weight of only 3.04 lbs. and durable heat treated internal gears and shafts, the Howe Steering Quickener can be used to either speed or slow steering response in your race car. This unit installs easily anywhere on the steering shaft with a GM spline (.735 in. 36-spline) U-joint or coupler.

pretty simple, splined steering u-joints on both sides of that box and your're good to go
RockDoc 04-05-2002, 10:46 AM I called Tera as well and spoke with Scotty?? They claim that the JP write up was not "authorized" and that someone got a hold to some of their "top secret" photos. They claim that the 'reduction box' is only a prototype and has yet to undergo testing and redesign. He claims it will be months before any unit is near production and would not comment on lengths nor price. Take that for what it's worth (which ain't much).
JB
Course if this thing mounts between the tranny and t-case like I'd heard you have another benifit. Keep the big and strong factory gears (say 3.07 being about as crappy as they come) and use this box to be at the same as having 5.37 gears instead. So you don't need to regear your junk to go with bigger tires!
cbassett 04-05-2002, 01:23 PM Thanks for the scoop RockDoc. That really sucks; that it'll be months before it's ready, and that some a-hole leaked it. Hey, did Scotty say anything about needing test rigs???:D

That explains the photo and caption being under "TOP SECRET -- JP SPY PHOTOS OF FUTURE PRODUCTS" in the rag.
Don't let them fool you, big companies like when prototype photos get released, creates a buzz. I suspect they sent the photo to JP. :D

Nope, no mention of needing 'test rigs'. He actually sounded somewhat pissed about the inquiry. I take it they must be getting more phone calls than they wanted to deal with.
