The throwout bearing in my SM420 bit the dust. So I pulled it out today, and it has a sleeve inside it. I tapped it out, and slipped it into the new throwout bearing... It's not anywhere near a press fit, and slips in and out. Is it supposed to be a press fit/snug fit? Or is it just supposed to float around in there?

i'd imagine it should be a pretty tight fit. whats the sleeve made of? does it look worn? chances are if you can buy it from the parts house and the guy knows what your talking about, it probably needs replacing. just my .02:beer:

well, there isn't supposed to be a sleve. The so-called sleeve is the piece that bolts to the tranny. the tubing part of it broke off. :(

I had a similar problem with my SM420 conversion in my cruiser. I had a "Sleeve" machined that slipped over the sm420 to allow me to use a stock landcruiser throw out bearing. And the sleeve would move with the throw out bearing. So I tack welded the sleeve to the tranny. and I have been running it for over a year now.

Lance I have several SM420's in my shed, I will look and see if I have a good input bearing retainer. If I do, it's yours. :D

Oh but to answer your question. the throw out bearing should float some what freely on the sleeve. Not super tight, but able to slide back and forth easily.
