I'm in the process of swapping a vortec 4.3 into my isuzu and the other night after making all the fittings for the power steering pump and box i realized that my stock steering box runs on ATF and the chevy pump takes regular PS fluid. now i'm stumped as to what i'm supposed to pour in it when the time comes to fire it up. my thinking is that the pump simply moves liquid and pressurizes it so it would be better to use ATF so that the box will work correctly but i wanna hear from some people who know better than I do. I know some toyota cars use ATF, are the trucks the same? If so what have all you toy guys done? thanks.

i used ATF with no problems, til my box leaked so much i used 20/50. problem solved. so i would say you'd be fine with ATF.:D

yup ATF, and if its new or rebuilt you might try synthetic ATF.

just use something oily:flipoff2:

I have always run ATF or Hy-tran(tractor fluid) no matter what vehicle, unless it was an old vehicle that leaked real bad, then the SAE 30 went in.:D

In my experiance p/s pumps and gears are very forgiving as to the choice of oil.

I have used P/S fluid, ATF, Jack oil, 5606, hydro oil, motor oil and many combos of the above:rolleyes:

I think stuff other then ATF or P/S fluid is harde ron the seals but as long as it's oil it will work.
