I have a 96+ GM NV4500/4WD tranny that would like to convert to a Dodge 4WD version.

I was told that internally both trannies are identical. The main difference is in the input and output shafts, as well as some external components.

Does anybody knows on how to do this one or knows anyone who sells kit for this? What are involved?

I know it's probably easier to sell the GM tranny and just buy the Dodge version. I do not want to buy brand new, neither I'll be throwing the dice in buying a used Dodge. My tranny is in excellent shape and would rather do the conversion myself.

The plan is to install the Dodge NV4500 to my 72 Bronco with 302 and Dana 30 t/c. Nobody sells an adapter for my GM NV4500 for this application.

Is there any possible options?

You are right. Just change the input and output shaft. The input shaft is simple. To replace the output shaft you will need to disassemble the entire tranny as the output shaft goes all the way through. You probibly need to change the tail housing also. Might as well sell it to someone that is using chevy on both ends and buy a dodge version. You can get a brand spankin new one from Dodge for $1500 and your D300 will bolt right up (might need a different input bearing retainer on the D300 that you can get from JB conversions for fairly cheap). You should be able to sell the GM version for the same price it would cost you to buy a used Dodge 4500.

Also be aware that there are two different Dodge versions, a LD and a HD, sorry I don't know the diff., but the HDs came behind diesels, maybe V10s.

I just did almost exactly what you are planning to do.

Mine was a 93 2wd commercial version of the GM NV4500, and I need to put it in front of a EB D20 tcase, but mine is going behind a 350.

i think your biggest issue will be that I don't beleive AA makes a bellhousing to mate your 95 GM NV4500 to a Ford engine.

The ass end iof that thing will need to look like a Dodge though, and this is how to do that:

Honestly, it's not really hard at all.

The mainshaft (also called output shaft) can be easily replaced as long as you have a way to get bearings pressed on and off.

With that, a decent set of retaining ring pliers (you can use snap ring pliers, but the right tool for the job a set of pliers called "eaton style retaining ring pliers" offered by McMaster-Carr for $14), and some way to torque down the mainshaft nut (it's a four slot spanner style nut)....Chrysler sells this tool (two tools actually, the spanner wrench which is Miller tool PN 6443 and the socket...which just holds the mainshaft from spinning while your are torqueing the nut actually....which is Miller tool PN 6442...these PNs are for the 23 spline mainshaft tools).

The standard duty 4wd Dodge NV4500 has a 23 spline mainshaft...(93-2000, in 2001 it became 29 spline). The HD versions came behind diesels, these 4wd models had 29 splines.

Other than these differences, there is no internal difference between HD and SD versions, in the same year. In fact, other than gear ratios, and the fact that reverse isn't synchronised on early GM models, the NV4500 trannies are all the same internally, hence why you can swap mainshafts so easily.

As far as parts, if your bearings are ok, you will need the mainshaft, Dodge Standard Duty (gas engine) 4wd tailhousing with seal.

I highly recommend this technician reference manual (found in this review) http://www.off-road.com/jeep/reviews/jlnv4500.htm .

You can buy the mainshaft from Novak for a great price( get the mainhaft nut too), and the tailhousing I was able to find used for less than $100.

I completely rebuilt mine while I was at it. I now know all the new GM bearing PNs etc, so if anyone needs any help, just ask.

good luck.

Ok so far everybody agrees that I need to replace the input and output shafts.

Why do I need a Dodge tailhousing? Should I just get the adapter from AA to connect my tranny to the Dana 20 transfer case? I guess that's what you meant, not the stock Dodge 4wd tail housing.

Also, what about the input bearing retainer? Are both Dodge and GM identical?

By the way, the cost of the input and outputs shafts is $450.
