: Riv-Nut Installation Tool ?

My buddies and I need to install a BUNCH of 1/4-20 riv-nuts, both for mounting fender flares and rocker skids.

We tried the ole' bolt and nut method with absolutely no luck whatsoever. I understand that there are some fancy automated pneumatic units that go for several bills a piece ... but that just isn't within our measly budgets.

I could on the other hand swing $75 for an ebay "knockoff" pneumatic rivet gun, a la':

What I need to know is; will this tool work for setting steel riv-nuts. My theory is; if it can collapse and break-off 1/4" rivets, it *might* be able to collapse 1/4" riv nuts as well.

Can anyone confirm/deny my theory or provide a better solution?

Thanks in advance.

they make a hand operated tool for setting them, it looks kind of like bolt cutters, but when you squeze the handles together it sets the riv-nut. A good one runs $40-70.

I've seen something similar to what you're describing for setting large rivets by hand. Do you have info as to where I can find one specifically made for setting riv nuts?

Thanks man!

How ironic! I just spent the better part of half the day today looking for a Riv-Nut Supplier. No luck. And than I come home to this. One of these days I'm gonna learn to ask here first.

I suppose I'll fill out my quota of "newbie help" for the day .. jus' kiddin' dude.

Go to www.fastenal.com (http://www.fastenal.com) and find the location nearest to you. Go there and pick up one of their "Big Blue" catalogs. Look at page 329 or so. You'll find any size of Avdel Cherry brand riv-nuts that you could need. We just picked up 200 1/4-20 steel units for about $0.27ea.

Damn, I swear that counter has got to be stuck or something!

Would you believe there's a friggin store right around the corner from my Cummins Dealer. Not 3 miles from my house. My old supplier went under about a year ago and I ran out of em about 6 months back.
Great tip! I needed some to mount the Baja Bugs back fenders on with.
Oh yea "Thanks CMK"CJ
