Can I throw a pair of ring and pinion from a V6 third member into a 4 cyl third member?

where do I get this shim? Plz, tell me more OPP'S. Why the shim is there, what years and gear ratios came with the shim etc etc etc

HEHEE, if the shim is there they used 4 cylinder gears in a v6 carrier...that is the only reason they would work...and whoever did the gears screwed ya.

Yep, the shim is used to run 4cyl gears in a v6 third, never heard of it done the other way, or see how it would work.

I'm pretty sure it won't work. The flange on the carrier which the ring gear bolts to is about 1/4" (?) *farther* from the center of the pinion than the 4-cylinder carrier's flange. So basically, the ring gear is too thick to fit in between the carrier flange and the pinion gear in a 4-cylinder differential.

On the other hand, you'll be okay as long as they are not superior or precision gears. All the other brands just give you a 4-cylinder gear set and a spacer for a V6 diff install. Just leave out the spacer when you put them into your 4-cylinder unit.

Maybe I should have explained this a little better. A guy I know bought some 5.29's and replaced his stock 4.56 gears in his V6 carriers with the 5.29's. He is now selling the 4.56 ring and pinions (two sets) and I would like to know if I could buy them and set them up in my 4cyl thirds.

probably not, the factory 4.56 ring gear would be wider as Dr. evil mentioned.

In that case, NO.
