: gearing sugg. what are you runnin?
StoutZuki 03-08-2006, 07:08 PM i got a 92 sammi with 33s, i can still cruise pretty good at 60-65 on the highway. i need suggestions on gearing. t-case or r&p or both, i go wheelin about once a month, but i drive to the trails usually 100 miles to are main spot. i notice it bogging down on hill climbs, i would like it to be better in that area. what are you guys running any suggestions are appreciated, i dont understand gearing completly yet.
OffRoad 03-08-2006, 08:43 PM it's been said that 5.12 tracker gears are good there.
or you could try 4.16 t case gears with and see how that works out.
maybe add 4.62s to the mix if it's not low enough.
by the way, i'll welcome myself to the pirate board. first post.
crashnzuk 03-08-2006, 08:58 PM I originally had 5.42s with stock case and 33s, it was good on road but not low enough for rocks. I then put in 4.16 case gears. After that I pretty much stopped driving it to and from. Now I have 6.12 case and 5.29s with 35s, and I RARELY street drive it. I hate not being able to drive it, but I think if I want a rig I can drive I will need to get something else or rework my drivetrain to handle better gearing. Use this info for what you will. No recommendations here.
Travis..
projckt_Wldkat 03-08-2006, 09:38 PM i got 5.12's and 32's and love it. plus if you got a couple of junkyards around you can do teh gears cheap via tracker gears.
StoutZuki 03-08-2006, 11:12 PM so if i can find a tracker, just swap the gears, are the tracker gears 5.12?
ian_r 03-09-2006, 09:41 AM I run 4.62s and a 4.9:1 case with 32s on my daily driver and it's been great for highway and trail (~83:1 crawl). 33s with this combo would be a little better than the 32s.
RIVERZUK 03-09-2006, 09:42 AM Mine's Got A 1.3, 4:89 T-case, 5:38 R&p, & 33's. I Gps'd It Down Hill With A Tail Wind At 60 Mph. For Whatever Thats Worth.
ChristianBenzon1 03-09-2006, 10:45 AM I have stock R & P with a 4.16 case on 33's. It works pretty well for me on the street and on the trail. I will probably at one point put lower gearing in the R&P but as it is it works just fine.
purevil71 03-09-2006, 12:18 PM I'd go with 4.62's and maybe the 4:1 case if it were me. But thats just me....lol
Hvy_Chevy 03-09-2006, 12:51 PM 3.73s (stock)
33s
and 5.14 t-case
just about perfect for DD and trail.
OffRoad 03-09-2006, 01:17 PM if you put in tracker gears, you need 2 front diffs. so you'd need 2 trackers with 4.62s if you were gonna do 4.62s.
the front diff on a tracker will fit in the front or rear of a sammy. the rear diff of a tracker won't fit in a sammy.
XTREME4X4PARTS 03-09-2006, 07:20 PM the front diff on a tracker will fit in the front or rear of a sammy.
actually it's not that simple, you need to swap the sammy side and spider gears for the rear, and then make sure the gears are re-setup correctly.
For highway use with 33's, 5.12's are too low, 4.62's are the gears you want to get you back to stock revs. -Especially considering that if you lower the t-case in the future, that'll be at least another 13% lower in high range.
Bolt in sets sell on ebay all the time, actually there's a set for sale on there right now :grinpimp:
I'm also running 32" tires, 4.62 R&P, with 4.9 t-case. It's find on the road, but I wish it was about twice as low on the trail.
scO44 03-09-2006, 07:32 PM i have been running 5:12's and a 4:1 with 34's.. It s ok wheeling, when i go to 35/37's i will go deeper in the case.. On the street it has plenty of gears to get up quickly..
But with this setup i can only cruise at 65-70 on flat (rpms).. I have also only gotten it up to about 90-95 so far though..
Whatever ya do DONT go 6-1 with 33's on the road will suck..
Later, Scott
