Gents,
I would like to open a discussion towards a trip to Moab. Do you Kalifornia guys only play in yer own back yards, or do you ever make it out that way? A group of us from "The South" are wanting to go this spring. Anybody go to the Easter thing or is there a more Zook-oriented gathering around that time?

I don't know what you'd think when I pulled up. To you guys driving a Toyota must be like wheeling a Perterbilt or something.

Me and Tusker were planning on going to Moab this spring as well. I don't know if any of the other NCC guys are up for the drive. I have always wanted to go but never been...isn't there a big zuk deal before or after the easter thing?

The club I'm in is going to Moab this spring. We would probably go a few days before Easter Jeep Safari to wheel, and then stay a few days into Easter Jeep. We went last year and had a blast. I know ShadowZuk goes during Easter Jeep and meets up with a ton of Zuk's. I'm sure he could tell you more, but I haven't seen him online lately. Regardless, we're going in early April, so I hope to see you guys there. ~Steve

WAY COOL!!!! I was just on the phone last night with a sweet older couple I met a few weeks ago at Paragon. They live in Utah and were touring around the east in their RV (with Jeep in tow) We're working on when I should head out their way to do some trails. This could be cool, I'm thinking april 02' but havn't made any plans yet !

Keep us all posted !!!

So are we making a plan?

I am going to Moab Sometime this Spring - just have to decide exactly when. Does anybody have a firm date that they are going? I kinda like the "Earlier than the Easter Event, staying a couple days into it" scenario.

The a few days ealier and then a few days of easter sounds good to me too. I need to be at home on Easter, I've got little kids and they are seroius about the egg thing.

I wonder if there are any places left to stay. I don't know how hard everything gets booked. I saw Glenn on the board, he must know whats up with Utah.

The big Suzuki gathering always starts a few days before the Easter weekend, so you'll see 100+ Zuks out there. I am tryimg to plan my trip, that's the timeframe, just gotta figure out the rest of the year since my wife has to request all her time off by January. Let me know when you guys plan on hitting Las Cruces. I still want to go this year and I know someone down there who can show us the trails (Bill, one of the guys from Izook).

There's always places to stay in Moab during Easter. If nothing else, pitch your tent next to another Zukfari attendee at Slickrock and split campsite costs.

Plenty of open campsites outside of town too. Only time I pay for camping is during Easter... just to be in the thick of things. Otherwise, you can find some really awesome camping just a few miles from town on BLM land, free.

So RR, can you recommend some cool campgrounds that might have space "in the thick of things". Normally the less people the better, but for this I want to gawk at rigs etc. I 'd like to make some reservations once we pick a date. Maybe some place a bunch of us could fit?

They're pretty decent. We've been getting cabins during Safari week. Carpet is hashed, you wouldn't want to grovel on it. Beds are fine. Main deal is that they have heaters. ts been pretty chilly the last few Safari weeks. Almost twice what a tent site is, but probably 1/5 what a hotel room is.

Sooooo....are they good? How about how much is a room? How much is a cabin??? Are they in the "zone". Phone #'s etc. would really be appreciated. Oh ya...is Zukfari an organized deal or just a show up and run kinda thing? We gotta make this work!!!! I'm bringing the whole family!

Better than a tent, not as good as a room. Cool place to be during Safari week.

>How about how much is a room? How much is >a cabin???

Depends on the timing. During Safari week, hotel rooms are downtown San Fran priced. Any other time you might only pay $40-50 for hotel room. Seems like we pay around $30 a night for the cabin during Safari week.

>Are they in the "zone".

Slickrock Campground... "where funpigs stay"

>Phone #'s etc. would really be appreciated.

Don't know it. they have a website though. Might be something like slickrockcampground.com A web search or Chamber of Commerce search oughtta do it.

>Oh ya...is Zukfari an organized deal or just a show up and run kinda thing?

Pretty much. Only real organized thing is the BBQ and prize drawing. Rest of the time you just make plans with the hundred plus other Zuks around.... or anyone up for wheeling for that matter. Dozens of trails and hundreds of killer obstacles just a few miles from town.

Thanks for all of the info. So do you know when zufari will be in 2002? Is it just a few days before the Easter thing or the whole week before?

Officially, Zukfari is always the Wed, Thurs, and Friday before Easter.

Most guys are down pretty much all week though. Free for all....

Glenn-are the days you gave for zukfari the same as when the Jeep Safari is going on? Do the Red Rock people get heated if were there at the same time? Sorry for all of the questions but I really wanna get this planned out and book it.

You don't want to be on the same trail at the same time as the official groups. It goes too slow and gets too congested.

I volunteer every year for trail duty with the official Safari and have been a member of the Red Rockers for several years.
It is well understood that other users are going to be out on the trails. it is also easy to avod the official groups since the itenerary is so well posted.

On top of that, many of the most fun trails nowadays are considered too extreme for the official groups to run which leaves them wide open for everyone else. The Helldorados, Pickle, Rusty Nail, Proving Grounds, and some other new ones never see any official Safari traffic.

I believe that throughout the Safari week, there are typically 5-7,000 4x4s in Moab. Only about 2,000 actually register for official trails. This might give you an idea of the scale on how easy it is to avoid the official groups.
