its kinda early in the project yet but what do you guys suggest: 5.38" gears, or 4:1 t-case drop? id say both, but im not made of mad money, so which one first? thanks

Do the t-case first if your not running 33"s or bigger. I'm running a 4.16 case and stock 3.73s with 31" BFGs and it works for me. Having that 4.1 low range is like night and day in the rocks around here.

Do the t-case first. The R&P's give you a 44:1 ratio, the t-case a 56:1 (GRS 1). BTW in one of the latest 4 wheel rags I noticed there's a new company making 5.29's for the Samurai, didn't say how much or if they were available.

what size tire are you going to run? I would say the case but maybe the 2 or 3??

I put the case in mine first because I was running 31s and I would do it the same if I had it to do over. It made a BIG difference. I put in 5.12s after and it made a difference but not quit as big. I would do the case first and save up and get lockers and gears second. Just my $.02

the tcase is not the place to skimp, get any thing less than 4.89 and you will just chase the RIGHT gearing around with axel gears which will tend to make it usless on the road

I have a 4.16 case with 5.12's and 33" swampers and it works good for what wheelin we have in washington.

I was going to go with 5.38s but heard that the aftermarket gearing for samis are weak. So is why I went with the 5.12s because you get a tougher rearend via a sidekick third and an all round stronger gear set.(or at least I haven't broken these gears yet). I have a line on another set of 5.12s. If you are interested send me a p.m.

Do the case first. If your dreaming of BIG rocks (who isnt?) I agree with Bobaki and go for the lowest case gears you can manage or you will wish you did in short order...right Tusker?

I'd get a grs1 if you have to do something as soon as possible. BUT I wish I wouldv'e saved longer & got a grs 2 first.

Secondly, I shoulda 5.12ed instead of 4.62s. ... but you learn from others....

hell- why am I still dicking around with sami axles because I only use it to go to the grocery store on the weekends.

its all about going slow- but i want to drive 200 miles to go slow so the bigger the spred between hi and low range the better .
the next set up i want to go 5.29 toy ,dual toy cases,2.28 +4.0 with 3.93 toy 1st=190low range 5.29hi 3xlower off road, slightly higer on road

bobaki,
Are you going to fit all that in to a short wheel base? How long will your rear drive shaft be when you get dual cases in that rig??

t case first, then some axle gears. i still don't think the extra money from a grs1 to a II is worth it. get a grs1 for 400.00 and save the rest for axle gears. i have a 4.16 and 5.12s and its never hurt for power on the trail. 192 to 1 low range is cool to brag about but not very usefull on the trail. except to break birfields and axles. my 2 cents mike

Mr racer you are right sir,it's way more gearing than I will need, but to get what I want I have to take some extra.

I agree, go with the case first, 4.16 case and 5.12s' with 33" swampers and I get around just fine but you could wait and get a grs3 for the cool factor

as of right now im running 31" radials. from what it looks like i will be doing the case first. this rig isn't ever going to see the street on its own power after "the project" is done though ill be towing it everywhere i go with it. however....ill be puting a locker in the rear, and im not sure if the rear end is even good yet. also, around here there aren't quite as big of rocks, so im not looking for extreme, just really nice gears.
thanks a lot for all the input guys, you really helped me out
