: 9 inch 35 spline axle questions
spwest2 04-04-2002, 08:58 PM OK I broke two 28 splines in less than 2 days in moab and now need beef. if i chose to go to 35 spline axles and a full spool will i need to get a new carrier? also how beefy are the 31 spline? worth it or just go big. lastly who would have the best price on 35 spline axles? they are for eb width 9inch

The spool is a new carrier.
JEEPRZ 04-04-2002, 09:17 PM Spend the $330 and get a nodular 3.25 case, and 40 spline shafts and spool. The 40 spliners arent much more than the 35 at this point
Yeah, to go 35 or 40 spline reguires a new aftermarket 3rd member(center section drop out). 31 spline is largest size in stock form.

I was waiting for some "facts" to be thrown out there! With a special spool you can go 35 spline in the 3.062 carrier, but the bearings start getting pretty small. 3.25" cases allow up to 40 spline and bigger bearings. if ya want a 35 spline detroit you need 3.25 case. I think I paid $340 for 35 spline and the 40's were like $450 roughly. They both have a lifetime warranty from dutchman.
rockbound 04-05-2002, 07:15 AM go 35 spline detroit!

Monkeyboy 04-06-2002, 12:05 AM Go 35 spline spool. Below is the strange stuff this stuff is built really well and should last.

Damn, I can't believe this thread has gone this long without the inevitable "get a D60" comment!
Stick with the 9", IMHO it can be made just as strong as a D60 and you don't have that aweful D60 pig hanging on every rock in the trail!
XJEric 04-06-2002, 07:20 AM Yea, but you do have that aweful low pinion. I have a 9 in my XJ, first trip out I did this. You can see where the yoke was smacking into the rocks. Don't get me wrong, I like the 9" it's super light, easy to weld on and strong but the low pinion is a MAJOR downfall.

Aggro 04-06-2002, 08:13 AM dutchman sells the "special" spool. www.dutchmanms.com I'd go nodular and never look back though. I've got a 3.25 nodular and it laughs at everything I can give it.

'Facts', 'Smacts'....At least we aren't arguing over what front axle came in a '79 F-250 4x2
Doh!
And the 33 spline is by who, Dutchman?

yeah, but doesnt the high pinion 9" use 8.8" gears and carrier? if so your looking at a lower grade gears and the 35 spline 8.8" spool is $351!!!
I think Detroit sells a 40 splline locker, but to get the 40 splines they must be made by Moser(dont know though if anyone else makes them or not), they are not TOO pricy and plenty beefy. i think this was a setup by one of the TTP guys a few years back. the red bronco(that thing was BAD -A-)
XJEric 04-06-2002, 02:24 PM Sure they make make some neat stuff for the 9" to make it as strong as a 60 but you'll have far more invested than you could buy a HP rear 60 for. My opinion is if you have a 9" run it. If you want to build a 9" as strong as a 60 get a 60!
spwest2 04-06-2002, 10:02 PM i would like to keep the 9 inch, smaller, lighter and stronger (35 spline and up). no need to worry about angle due to i have a scrambler and it is stretched 2 inch on the back half. Great specs and the price list is way cool, thanks. time to start saving.

I have a 9"/Dana 60 front and a RC D60 rear and the front has 2" more clearance than does the rear due to the angle of my rear drivline and the slope of the bottom of the housing.
2" is a lot! If I could, I would have a 9" back there....
