: ***snap!*** What The Freak!
Snoopy 04-04-2002, 10:23 PM So, we finally got that Scout finished, you know, the one with the 1/4 elliptics. We took it into the dirt area next door and checked it out. Yup, rides good, putters up little hills good. then we see this mound of dirt. And think, you know, lets go see what she'll do...
First let me say that this mound is more like where a dump truck dumped it's load ~ 3' tall, nicely sloped on each side, up we go, the tires sink in about 1/4 of the hieght of the mound. Then over the top we go, come down SUPER cush and SNAP!
We come to a stop and take a look, Hey, the truck is level! ~ Sweet, but why....then we saw this:
Snoopy 04-04-2002, 10:29 PM Ya, we're kinda bummed. I mean, it was working SOOOO good. Alcan hit the spring rate perfect, and then this.....UGH!
Oh well: Bringgg, Bringgg - "Hello Alcan spring." "Yes is charles there?"...."Hello, this is charles" " Hey charles, Damian here or D and C ~ remember those ellip's we got? ~ check your email, I got some pictures for you."
JoshC 04-04-2002, 11:21 PM That's just plian silly! :No talkin shite cus what comes around goes around: I'm glad Charles took care of you.
Dit you say 3 foot mound?
muskyman 04-05-2002, 05:44 AM wow ...bummer
talk about an honest builder showing the first break!
bad spring?
to small primary leaf?
REDDMANIAC 04-05-2002, 06:11 AM Looks to me like while the spring was fanned out, a little side motion caught it on the frame.

Nope, the spring is over 1" away from the frame at any given point, there are 6 Grade8 9/16" bolts caging it in. The rough metal that you see on the frame is where the old supsension system and body mount was cut off, and ground down to make room for the 1/4 ellitpic pack.

I sent the pictures to Alcan at 11:30 PM, I called this morning at 7:45 am (only 8ish hours later) and Charles had already started building the new main leafs (for both packs). They will ship today, I'll have them Monday.
I can't tell you why it broke, Charles says that due to the fracture, and the way it broke (being it wasn't straight across), it doesn't look like the spring was stressed in any direction, he said that the problem was due to faulty material that gave (which he said looked 'layered' from the spring manufacturer).
Like I said, he's got the new mains being built now and will be sending them this afternoon. I can't say more about Alcan's commitment to make this situation right and making it right, "right now." This is why I deal with alcan; cost = real decent. Willing to make it right 'right now' = priceless.
here is a picture of the owner lining it up for the ramp, yes, the sun is in his eyes BIG TIME.
Snoopy 04-05-2002, 07:29 AM TC (the rigs adopted name) on the trailer. It's going to get it's new exhaust.
I will say that I personally LOVED the straight pipe sound of this 345. It was EXTREMELY quiet even with the pipes ending only 2 feet from the headers. :D
Talk about throttle response! :D   :D

Maybe that's cause his rig sits sooo high, he's actually closer to the sun than any human has ever dared.
D and C~ "Taking wheelers to new heights" ;) :p:flipoff2:
ScoutsHonor 04-05-2002, 09:00 AM Damian,
With the stock fenders still in place in the back... how did that work out? I'm talking about the inner fenders in the back that you said you guys didn't cut any.... with the bob job... how did that all go back together???? That looks really sweet... I really like that... and I've got another Scout sitting in my shop that I'm thinking about doing the same way.... just wanna know more before I cut into it..

jdjanda 04-05-2002, 09:25 AM Bummer, glad to see Alcan setp'n up to the plate. Is it possible to add a second full length leaf? If there is another spring failure, with a second full length leaf might have a better chance of getting it off the trail.
BTW, I'd order a third main and carry it as a spare.

Actually that is exactly what we are doing. The driver side is still in tacked, Alcan is sending us 2 mains so we'll replace the current ones and keep the good one for a spare.

Matt, I hope you don't mind, but I'm changin your name to Duck, or Ducky ~ you pick.
Your right, the inner fenders are in tact. We ramped it (initially) to 50" or about 1450 on an RTI. That is when the rubber met the outter enders. The owner can cut more if he wants to, but that is where we are going to leave it.
Shadow man 04-05-2002, 11:17 AM Wanna go run it on Indy? There will be 4 or 5 ready to go in a week or two. We are in post Moab recovery repair now! :D
