: Holley projection
55crawler 03-11-2006, 04:07 PM I'm a total newb and I know that this has probably been addressed several times but I tried a search and it told me that the search feature has been disabled. I'm running a mid-80's Chevy 350 with the truck avenger 470 cfm and have had nothing but problems with it; sticky choke plate overflowing bowls causing massive fuel leaks, stalling, rough idle, just to name a few. I'm on my second Truck Avenger and despite all of the tuning, it just isn't working out. It's time for the fuel injection. I'm seriously considering the Holley Projection 2 bbl 670 cfm (i'm a college student on a budget, don't have a lot of money). I've heard that they are very sensitive to altitude changes, but have also heard that they are easy to tune via the control box that comes with it. If any of you have had experience with this system please let me know how it works. If you have any other suggestions on fuel injection systems that work well for under 1k (I haven't found one yet) any advice you can give will be appreciated!:jeep2:
4x401cj 03-11-2006, 04:43 PM While I haven`t personaly delt with the Holley system, I read far more bad reviews about it, than good. Check out the vendor forum for "Affordable Fuel Injection".
myojunk 03-11-2006, 06:06 PM i had it on an ol truck and personally i think its JUNK! i had to adjust on it almost everyday seemd like. i would have been alot better off w/ a new carb. but i have seen a few (like 1) that actually ran good. but i will never use it again. i'd buy a factory set-up from a junkyard if i were to do it again.

Thanks for the advice, I'm getting the idea that I probably shouldn't go with this kit.

I checked out that thread and ended up at the guy's website. Sounds like a good system! A little more than I want to spend, but I'd much rather do it the right way.
Easy Rick 03-11-2006, 07:42 PM These guys are right. The analog, and digi systems are both very tempermental. I had the projection 4bbl analog system and a buddy had the digi setup and I always had to adjust my knobs and he was messing w/ his at every elevation and temp change. The diff was that I could adjust mine under my seat on the go. While he had to wait till he got home to hook it up to his computer to try and duplicate/remedy problems. Your best bet is to pull something stock at a yard and wire it into your truck. IMO.
Good luck Brotha.

72blaze 03-12-2006, 12:57 PM i had the older 670 projection system on my 350. it worked great from time to time as the others said i was always adjusting the settings. i latter tried to save the system by adding on the O2 kit, it did help a little, less adjustment needed, but still looking for more i ended up going to a holley 670 truck avenger, and the projection is still on the shelf. had trying the elderbrock 750 out with no end insite for the troubles i had with it on hills and stability. the elderbrock carb did have good response and ease of tune but never ran as good as the 670. look at it this way aswell, a fuel injection system has a whole lot of items to go bad, and when they do, if not to savy with fuel injection systems, you will be stranded. my friend started out with a stock gm conversion, it worked well until offroading took its toll on the sensors. not to fear he went to the edelbrock proflow. it was far the best until a fuel pump issue leaned out the motor and boom under full throttle in a muddathon. i would go with the carb and find the other issues causing the failures. i have stuck with the 670 truck avenger and love it. alittle pukey at idle but gets it on pretty good when the loud pettal hits the floor. my 2 cents.
Magnum_Willys 03-14-2006, 04:48 PM I've run the same Holley 900cfm Projection 4 unit for 16 years and its worked great. Replaced two TPS sensors and one injector in that time. I've never had to adjust it except for motor swaps. I run it closed loop with the O2 sensor which needs to be replaced every couple of years.
You do need a good large fuel filter, large supply line, large return line, isolated fuel pressure gage for it to work right and diagnose any problems. Otherwise you are going to be fiddling with the settings trying to compensate for fuel pressure or flow changes. Putting the isolated fuel pressure gage in the dash has been invaluable - I know its a fuel pressure problem and not the settings - also - I bypassed the pump controller which is also a culprit at times.

This system may be better due to the o2 sensor but I assure you the fuel pressusre was never a problem w/ my projection4. The fuel pressure is not controlled by the computer on the analog version. There is the standard mechanical pressure controller in the throttle body that does that. An in dash pressure gauge would only help you adjust, or tune the engine, not that it would solve anything. Go stock or go high dollar not in between..02

Seems like it's going to be too expensive for me either way so i'm just going to stick it out with the Truck Avenger. I put a fuel pressure regulator on it and the leaking has stopped so i'll just have to wait and see how it does on the trail. Thanks for all the info! I guess my fuel injection money is just going to have to buy the Jeep some lockers!
Thanks again,
Stacy
Lmpymilk 03-15-2006, 05:00 PM I have the Holley Pro-Jection 2D system (502-20S). I love this thing. I drive this rig every other weekend from 2000’ to 6700’. Only time I have had an issue was before I put in the O2 sensor.
This is also a digital system but no need to wait till you’re home to hookup a laptop. I can turn the dials while in the hills. There is really no need to do this once you have the O2 sensor in.
I would never put another carb on my rig again.
77 AMC 401 is the engine I am using it on.
