: Dual Case Problems
Benny 04-05-2002, 12:27 AM Yes, I searched. Read alot of good stuff, but nothing that could help me.
I have it all bolted together and sitting in the shop. The front case is stuck in Low. The original case (still the front case) was hard to get apart. The shift rod was a little tricky.
I cant get the front case out of LOW. any ideas? I even lossened it all up to see if it was bound up. I have sealant on there, so I would like to avoid taking it apart, but I know it will most likely need to be done...
Overkiller 04-05-2002, 12:49 AM Did you have a hard time shifting the case in and out of low before you tore it down? I greased up my shift rod when I put it together and it shifts smooth. When it's in lo range the shift fork is way the hell back, is it possible that yours is physically stuck on something? And not to be a dick and point out the obvious but did you spin the input to line everything up. Also is your case the forward shift or the direct mounted style that might help others with more knowledge help you.

Benny 04-05-2002, 01:17 AM I greased my shaft also :D
but its still stuck. It appeared to be in working order before the tear down.
The t-case is a front loader (in the tranny tailhousing) Its a W56. The origianl case is still bolted to the tranny and a oldeer case ('82 I think) is bolted behind that.
Hell, maybe my shift rod is bent. it came apart kinda hard, but went together fine. But nevertheless, stil stuck
Overkiller 04-05-2002, 01:29 AM If I remember right there should be a block off plate on the reduction box when the shifter would be. If you take that off is there anything you can see inside that it's hitting on? Maybe the shift fork got shoved to far back and the shifter can't budge it. maybe try moving the shift arm forward with a pry bar. Or perhaps those two shafts inside aren't lined up exactly. Hell I don't know I've had a few:beer:s but whatever you do use a little more profanity and tool throwing. It works well for me:rasta:

Benny 04-05-2002, 01:37 AM I have that plate removed. Everything apears to be normal. The shift rod is all the way back (for LOW) and wont move forward (to shift to HIGH)
I would have already had it torn apart if it werent for that damn silicone. Why dont they just include a gasket with the adapter
I guess I will just tear it apart again and look real close. then put it back together without silicone to make sure its working.
Overkiller 04-05-2002, 02:01 AM Good luck man, I test fitted mine together before the silicone. Glad I did now. Remember the profanity trick, my crawler went together smooth after a few choice words.
Try putting the rear case into 4wd-low first. Then try to put the front case into low....
Did you cut off the shift rod on the rear case?

Benny 04-05-2002, 04:16 AM OK, I got it working somewhat...
The rear case works fine. always has. The front case was stuck in LOW. I took it apart and shifted the shiter without the gears hooked up, a little stiff. I put the splined sleeve over the gear, (the new one and the old one) and it slides over it just fine. but when everything is bolted together, its REALLY stiff. I put some grease on it and it got better, but not a smooth motion. I have to force it. but everything works properly.
I was thinking that it may get better once I get gear oil in there. But I dont want to waste all that gear oil (read, money) if it wont cure it....
Mine was REALLY easy to shift before i tore it down, when i did the FROR twin-stick install and had the shift detent balls and springs out i stretched the springs slightly, cleaned them extremely well, and greased them up, it now shifts into gear more positivly and shifts are firmer too...
Try pulling your shift springs/balls for the interlock pins...Worth a shot.
Greg@RME 04-05-2002, 10:34 AM Are you sure you put the shifter is in correctly and not backwards?
It will go in the wrong way!! I put mine in wrong at first, and it was a PITA to shift. Every once in awhile I could get it to shift, and it worked, but it was hard to get it into gear. I pulled it apart and put in in the other way and now it works as slick as could be.
I know it's kinda a 'given', but it seems that the basic stuff is what screws things up! Give it a try before you tear the case apart!
Brian Ellinger 04-05-2002, 12:17 PM Check that the shifter itself can easily move inside the fork. Ive seen a number of setups, where the tip of the shifter gets tight, and ends up real hard to shift. Make sure you have just a little play side to side at the tip, if not file the fork and welded piece a little.
Benny 04-05-2002, 12:47 PM I have the W56 tranny. the shifters for the tranny and t-case is one peice. can not be put backwards...
I will check the tip of the shifter, and grease it. I dont have my welder here, so I havent welded that keeper on there yet.
Also, I dont have the detent balls installed at all, YET.
Benny 04-08-2002, 06:32 AM Top.
Any more ideas?
