I witnessed some heavy action on a set of Bobby Longs and the weak link was the locking hub in this case. We were going up a steep embankment that was a little slick due to loose gravel and wedged the back passenger tire on a tree stump. It was stuck between the fenderwell and the tire. This put pressure on the frot end and was pounded on untill the bolts on the hub were sheared off. The hub actually fell off the truck! Anyone else ever have this happen ?

Was it a stock Aisin hub? I've only seen Warn hubs break like that. In fact, I've never witnessed an Aisin hub break, though I'm sure it's happened.

Since it sheared all the studs, I'm thinking it wasn't using the cone washers.....

I think that happened to TinBender before. Stock Aisin. I popped a cover apart before.

I've seen that happen on a Sammi which also run Aisin hubs stock.

I'm sure Camo has, he breaks everything. And I think they broke one in Bobby Long's video where they were doing the testing.

What are the chances the hubs werent torqued right? Also another good example of why bumpstops really are a good thing!

I've seen it happen on my friend's truck at Cadillac Hill. He has 91 extracab with 3.0 v6, marlin's 4.7 gears, 5.29s, and lockrites. He sheared all 6 studs and the two hardened locating pins off flush with the stock Aisin hubs! Yikes. But it didn't hurt the hub body!

We then checked the driver's side hub and found that the nuts were loose. Loose nuts is probably what allowed the studs etc. to be sheared off. Don't forget to go over your rig with a wrench occasionally!

Only real wheelers break birfs, not web wheelers. They just break the caps lock button on the keyboard:flipoff2:

It's OK though, SeaBass. No matter how hard I try, I can't break a birfield either. Not even a stock one.

But that cuz I still (temporarily) have IFS!

I've seen the studs break off on a couple of occasions...generally it is cause they get loose and no one notices. That's what happened to me.:p Broke 4 off at Elbe Hills  I don't know how cause there is NO traction there :D (it is all slick mud)

i saw a toyota blow up a rear axle this weekend on Independence. It was forced to use only front wheel drive and a winch to get off the trail(took several hours). There were many instances where a stock birf definately would have failed.....good thing he had super's.
