I have done a search and could not find any answer for my problem. I did read that frame filters are the worst ones out there. With that said my problem is.

I have a 1983 toyota trailblazer with a 22r in it, I did a oil change this weekend and installed a Fram PH3614 filter. It appeared to be to small for place were it monnts (I can see the surface were the gasket seals around on the outside of the filter base). I got it on and it has a slight leak were the seal is (I put oil on the gasket and did not over torque it). Is there another filter I should go with or is this normal?

i always use a toyota oem filter, there about the same price and a freind told me (who is a toyota mechanic) that toyota filters are made to hold a small amount of oil in the top of the motor for constant lubrication on start up. as for your leak i dont think a leak is normal, double check that the filter gasket is infact secured to the filter and that buy mistake you didnt get the wrong filter. good luck

I would reccomend using the oem toyota filters. They are around five bucks at the dealer, and from what I read are alot better than fram. Frams supposedly have a meager anti drainback device, and poor filtering, etc. It is obviously not normal to have a leak around the filter, even with hand tightening it should not leak a drop. The bozo that rebuilt my engine tightened the filter with a wrench on mine so tight that it took me and my buddy and two or three ruined filter wrenchs, and a near hernia to even budge it, and we crumpled it up just getting it off. I was using a fram a good while back, but it wasn't the same number you mentioned. I don't recall the exact number maybe a ph43 I think anyhow it was much bigger than the small filters, I have heard both sides of the argument, a larger filter has more filtering area etc and a small one gets oil to the motor quicker, and so forth and so on :flipoff2:

try a NAPA GOLD 1515- they have the proper anti-drain back seal

it is made by WIX for NAPA, and is a high quality filter. Also, it is a full quart filter, adding a little extra capacity. they are listed for a Ford-, but thread size and gasket location are correct for your truck too. Compare them side by side at a NAPA store. Any of the Ford filters will work (like a Fram PH1) for a cross refferance-

For the time being, I'm running a mechanic/oil change shop for a guy. I run a 22RE, but it takes the same filter. First off, I have come across a few defective filters, so don't rule that out. You are using the correct Fram #. It sounds like you've done everything OK, but the filter may be jacked. It may be worth getting a replacement to be on the safe side. Some of the alternatives would be the STP S3614, Mobile1 M1-102, Phillips PO241, or Service Champ OF241. Happy oil change. :D

I almost forgot. I don't have the numbers for the Factory Toyota or the WIX filters, but they would be the best quality.

dude ... do not use a fram. fram has been having serious problems from what i can gather. i was reading on another list how a few guys had their engines go south after changing the oil and putting on a new fram filter. I said to myself, probably just bad luck with the engine. 4 days after changing my oil and putting on a new fram i found myself sitting on the side of the road with a locked up head from oil starvation.

search the net, some guy did an oil filter study as some kind of college project the results aren't pretty. definitely go with an oem filter to be safe.

try the oem Toyota filter, it comes with a new drain plug washer.

or try the WIX filter #51068 it is much bigger, more volume.

WIX is a subsidiary of DANA (yeah like DANA 60). they make good stuff!

The USA Toyota filter is made by Puralator and appears to be a hybrid between the Pure One and the Premium Plus. I use the Japanese mini-truck filter. Instead of pleated paper it filters with resin. Kinda cool cut open. The Tundra filter is more-or-less the same, but way cheaper. I usually purchase them a dozen at a time from a discount dealer. The -02011 filter cost me less than $4 that way. Here are a bunch of part numbers to cross reference from. Stay away from Fram like everybody said. Their anti-drainback valve is trash and leads to dry starts.

Something to check on your truck. Make sure you didn't leave the gasket behind from your old filter. They do come off and will cause a leak.

OEM Size Oil Filters
Toyota: 08922-02011, $4.91 (mini-truck, USA);
Toyota: 90915-YZZB9, (mini-truck, Japan)

NAPA Gold: 1068
Pennziol: PZ-21
Puralator: L10241, PL10241
Wix: 51068

Oversize Oil Filters
Toyota: 15600-41010, $12.33 (superseded by 90915-YZZB5, but still available)
AC Delco: PFL1A, PF2, PF2217, UPF2, SPF2
Fram: PH8A, DG8A, TG8A K&N: HP-3001

I think that was me. I have cut open several filters, including the latest Fram ExtraGuard, the one with the grippy stuff on the end of it. It is JUNK inside. DO NOT USE THEM.

I just bought an '87 xcab on Wednesday. It belonged to a former Toyota tech, he said he always used OEM filters on it. But he changed the oil a few weeks ago in preparation of selling it, he didn't have any OEM filters in his garage, and it was Sunday. So he ran down to the local WalMart and bought a Fram. Well, I really laid into him for using a Fram (he's a good friend too). I drove the truck home on Wednesday night. Last night I pulled it into the shop, took the Fram filter off and installed an OEM. But the scary part was that the engine was off for only about 5 minutes when I unscrewed it, it came off basically EMPTY. No big splash of oil everywhere, just a little drool. In otherwords, the anti-drainback valve DID NOT WORK.

Buy the OEM filters. You can get them for less that $4 each if you buy a case. This is a perfect example of a case where the #1 seller is not necessarily the best.

the hot ticket for the ultimate oil filter for your performance 22r-re
is the Motorcraft FL1-HP. Extra quart of capacity, steel anti-drainback valve, super high quality element with much more surface area, and a thicker case for better burst strength. These are first class racing filters. They can be bought at most Ford dealers.

I like the Puralator Pure 1 filter, about $5, and use the bigger filter spec'd for the older FJ's.

i use a mobil1 oil filter and mobil1 oil. i can see spending 12 bucks for the filter cause i get the oil for free from work. i use the mobil1 filter the goes to a ford. it is huge and holds an extra quart of oil. the fram cross for the mobil1 filter is a PH8A . i hope that helps.

I use the Purolator PureOne equivalant of the Fram PH8A. The anti drain back valve works good on it also. Always have the typical mess making splash when removing it.

this is the one i put on last week,
its bigger than the stock mini.
and the guy said they are using these on cruisers, tundras and the lexus stuff.
plus with one of these you get a little extra oil.
