: Ever have this happen?
binderbart 03-17-2006, 02:13 PM The terra has sat for about 3 weeks, I fired it up today, filled the tank and headed out on a 100 mile journey. Got about 30 miles into the trip, stopped to take a leak, got back in and went to fire it up and it turned over like the timing was way off. Took about a minute to start.
Ran about another 20 miles, shut it off for about 10 minutes, got back in and it did the same thing. Ran it about 5 minutes, shut if off for about a half hour and now it started fine all the way home???
I'm going to take it to work to night to see how it acts.
Old Scout 03-17-2006, 02:28 PM Is it cranking slow? Is the advance stuck in the dizzy?
rusty scout 03-17-2006, 02:30 PM gold box?
Brandon 03-17-2006, 02:45 PM occasionally mine will diesel or whatever it is called (not shut off) but it's not all the time and I can't figure out just when it does it - it is driving me nuts..
REDDMANIAC 03-17-2006, 03:22 PM Mine would diesel occaisionally, and the BOOM...backfire. I'd jsut be getting to work too and everybody walking in the parkinglot would just freak. I could only smile and say "sorry". But that I think was due to it having such bad/none bodymounts under the firewall that it would let the engine run rich up until I turned it off. BOOOM!
Brandon 03-17-2006, 03:36 PM so how did ya fix it or ?
yea, mine only does it if I take someone to lunch or if there is a crowd around LOL

my pickup does that but with out the dieseling. turn it off then 3-5 seconds after BANG!!!
is it just turning over slowly? could be a old starter solenoid geting hot, that little copper disk is probibly burnt and coroded to hell

it running to hot and or your idle speed is to fast

I got a different tub with intact mounts. There was som much play in the mounts the acc cable wouldnt realease properly is my guess.
binderbasher 03-17-2006, 06:09 PM Mine started doing that about six months ago. At first it was hard to start when the engine was hot, but fine cold. Then about after a week of that I drove it through a creek and the gold box melted, and left me stuck.
I bought a DUI setup, installed it, and timed it.
No more problems, plus better power and fuel economy.
Just a newbie's .02
chris408 03-17-2006, 09:19 PM mine used to do that. timing was off.
Eagle-Mark 03-17-2006, 10:14 PM Mine never does that! :flipoff2:
Go EFI!
Bill usn-1 03-17-2006, 11:03 PM None of mine do that!
binderbart 03-20-2006, 05:48 AM Spent the weekend in the shop wrenching so I really didn't have time to come back in and answer. I read all the post real quick and went out to check things out.
First I popped the distributor cap. I made sure the advance was free. Seemed a little stiff at first, After I worked it back and forth a few times I tried it with the vaccum line and a vaccum gun. It worked fine.
I put a 79 distributor in this so the gold box is ruled out. I checked the timing and it was right on. So I pulled the starter connections and cleaned them and the battery connections.
As a last resort I dumped a can of seafoam in the tank and filled it again. So far so good, its been starting right up without any problems. I even did a load test on the battery and it checked out good. I'm wondering if sitting for a few weeks it might have gotten moisture in the cap and its gone now.
binderbart 03-29-2006, 10:29 AM The Terra did it again today, once. 6 months ago it got new cap, rotor, wires and plugs. I checked the timing when it did it today and its still good.
I'm wondering if maybe the starter might have a bad spot in the armature thats causing this. So I stopped off at the parts store and they want $90 for a new starter. That would be an expensive guess.
If I get time this weekend maybe I'll swap starters with another one of my scouts and see if this fixes it. When it acts up it seems almost like the battery is almost dead. I checked everything over good today, about 45 minutes worth. The battery load tested good. all connections looked clean from a week ago. I even pulled every plug wire, both ends looking for corrosion.
REDDMANIAC 03-29-2006, 02:30 PM Could it be heat soak to the starter solenoid? Cheap fix would be a new one or a heavy duty one from Blue Streak. Those symptoms sound very familiar to me.
corncrasher 03-29-2006, 06:10 PM sounds like starter/battery problem to me. If the battery test out good without a bad cell or internal short and all the wiring looks good I would suspect starter.
chris408 03-29-2006, 09:00 PM None of mine do that!
Same :grinpimp: but i think it is a fuel issue.
it was when I had my Qjet...i had the same problems.

And decent spelling :flipoff2:
ogrescout 03-30-2006, 10:17 AM My guess is a low octane level in the fuel. Our 75 304 does it depending on what gas you run in it. A higher octane fuel might be your best bet.
Nathan 03-30-2006, 10:35 AM One of my Scouts used to exhibit these same symptoms. Turned out to be a combination of starter "heat soak" and fuel vapor lock. I Remote mounted the starter solenoid and a re-routed, insulated fuel line solved the problem.

When you say remote mounted the solenoid, are you refering to the ford style solenoid upgrade? Also, what is insulated fuel line, in all my years of wrenching I've actually never heard of this....call me a newb:flipoff2:
Nathan 03-30-2006, 08:13 PM Bart-
Ford style solenoid mounted on inner fender. Go ahead and buy two cause they're $12 apiece. Mount them side by side. If and when one fails, your spare is right there. The stock fuel line (tubing) from mech pump to carb I've found out is too close to engine. I re-routed the line away from motor, wrapping it in tin foil and header tape. Look at IHOJEFF's Aluminum intake post. I'm guessing his fuel line is the one wrapped in foil in the pic as well.
