I have a Jacobs 20N chuck, and I need to remove the arbor. It apparently uses a 5JT connection. Can I just knock it out using a drift up inside the jaws?

I see no reason why not. Are you trying to reuse the chuck or the arbor?
There is a slight chance of damage to either, but I wouldn't sweat it.

Mine has a threaded coller to push the chuck off the shaft. Otherwise there are normally a wedge that you tap in above the chuck to remove it. I doubt that the chuck is open from the jaws to the tapered shaft

This is what the arbor looks like.

The wedge insertion is for removing the taper adapter from the drill press. Removal of the taper adapter from the chuck requires driving it from the chuck through the opned jaws. The risk of damge is if the drift "Drifts" and gouges the mating surfaces of either the chuck or the adapter shaft.

Ah, OK. My arbor is more like this one where the collar presses the chuck off the arbor.

And this is the style you use the wedges to remove the chuck from the arbor:

Not quite. You use the wedge tool to remove the arbor from the drill press spindle.

I'm not talking about a taper wedge, these are like little horseshoes and you use them to remove the chuck from the Arbor. Or I could have been imagining all this stuff the last time I stripped down my Avey ;)

Last tool on the page
But that won't work with the style arbor you are running. Good luck

That makes sense. :)
